I just got my PA A.B.A.T.E. newsletter. They have a summary from the PA Motorcycle Safety Program for 2010. Here's the breakout of the number of folks completing the course in 2010.
Females - 6,163 Males - 17,790
Ages #students 16-25 6,646 - 28% 26-35 5,771 - 24% 36-45 5,196 - 22% 46-55 4,374 - 18% 56-65 1,645 - 7% 66-75 290 - 1% 76 & up 31 - .001% Total - 23,953
The program has trained 381,599 students since it started in 1985. Please note that the program here in PA is not required for a license but it is free. This year they are adding a trike course.

Free? That is a good deal. In GA you have to pay for it, I think.

Is the equivalent to an MSF Basic Rider Course?
In Florida, the MSF Course is required to get a motorcycle endorsement and you have to pay for the class. I think I paid nearly $300 for my class. I think you can find it cheaper, but this location was convenient.

It's the Basic Rider Course. I think $5 of the learner's permit fee ($10) goes to support it. They've changed the Experienced Rider Course (Now Basic Rider 2) a little and now offer the Trike course. They have a number of sites although you may have to cross county lines to get to the nearest. I see they've updated some of the vids. Here we can either take the course and get the class M endorsement or take a test at the DMV license center. When I took it, the instructors said the MSF first try success rate was about 75%. At the DMV, the failure rate on first attempt was about 75% because DMV only tests on the box and swerve/stop. Try those as a newbie on a hog. PA also allows scoots in the classes if you ask and has a couple locations where scoots are provided for students. If you take the course, you're not subject to some of the experience restrictions that you would be if you didn't. www.pamsp.com/

HI has a course for $200 which allows you to ride and insure a >50cc but you really still need to get the licence I think? It just allows you to buy a bike and ride it during the day only without a passenger for up to a year (the dmv test removes these restrictions). I just took the test for $10 and skipped the course. I do intend to go back and do the shorter experienced rider course for those that like to do things arse backwards and take the test first as I am sure I will learn plenty. The test here was pretty easy, a 90 degree corner and stop in a box. A cone weave and a U turn, an emergency stop and a weave I think. I managed it after being awake for 22 hours on an unfamiliar loaner I got 3 points for skidding on my controlled stop, rode though a small lake on my way to the stop and forgot the loaner didnt have abs The tests really aren't that hard but the safety course is a great idea! Amazing to see states doing them free. If only the driving test was tougher and could somehow weed out muppets.

Come on M/C. Those are gov't stats and we know how accurate they are. I took the course when I was 59 so I was in the top 10% of my class.
