Same old Same old Still an issue. Solved By speedracer (Read 2,122 times)

Hard cold starting Roketa 54B .... Here is what is not wrong with it.

1. Valves (did it)

2. Spark plug (new)

3. Vacuum lines (new)

4. Fuel filter (new)

5. Starter (cranks over fast)

6. Enricher (new one installed)

7. A/F has been adjusted many times to no avail.

It takes exactly 8 tries to start engine after sitting all night. Once it starts it keep running. It has never stalled once running. It has plenty of pick up. It never bogs down. If parked after being run at least several miles it will only start by giving it throttle. Once started no problems at all.

I have three things left I could do.

1. CDI

2. MIKUNI fuel pump which will be installed tomorrow.

3. For sale sign put on it.

Have you checked your Air/Fliter, Have you Cleaned out the Pilot Jet and Pilot Jet Passages.
When your adjusting the Air/Fuel Mixture does it Change the Idle or no change when turning the screw.
If after you run it and you have to give it throttle to start it, its is only a few things, To Much Fuel, Not Enough Fuel, To Much Air or Not Enough Air.

Or yet another new plug and coil. Also pull some connections apart and put them back together. Slight corrosion from sitting awhile. Also, are you cracking the throttle open a few times before you start it?

Alley, I didn't mention the air filter, but I clean it every 1000 miles and that was cleaned about 300 miles ago. Now as far as the A/F screw goes. There is no way to get at it while the scooter is hot from a run. The only way to get a screw driver on it is to loosen both the intake and manifold clamps and turn the carb 90 degrees. Then after the exhaust pipe is cool enough you can make an adjustment. This is a hit and miss thing. I pulled the plug which has about 100 miles on it and it showed the engine was learn. So I did make it a little richer by a 1/4 turn.

I did put a Mikuni fuel pump in, but I won't know until tomorrow if it's going to start right away or not.

kz1000st The scooter has 3300 miles on it and this is the 3rd plug so far. The new NGK iridium according to Doc is a hotter plug, but the results are the same. I have checked the spark and it's a bright blue so I don't think I have a coil problem.

No one has mentioned my 3rd solution which is put a for sale on it.

HEHEHE!! crap if your having problems WHO in their right mind would buy that Piece of crap.

But really kidding aside what your experienceing can be fixed it is just finding what it is, TO MUCH GAS, NOT ENOUGH GAS, NOT ENOUGH AIR , TO MUCH AIR. Other than that it does start and run it is just not catching right away.

If you have spark then the fuel pump is a non-issue. Gas should already be in the float bowl and ready to make it run. If the problem is happening worst when it's cold it sounds like either your choke isn't working properly, new or not, or your enrichment circuit is clogged and the carb needs cleaning. Before I would rip the thing off I would do the Seafoam in the tank routine and see if that helps after awhile. The best check would be to put your hand across part of the air filter opening while it's cold and try to start it that way and see what happens. Sort of a one hand butterfly effect. If it runs you know you have a choke problem.

Mine does this too if it is not really cold out. If it is around 50 or below it will start fine. If it has been running and sat for about 30 minutes it take s a little throttle to make it go. I think the problem is too much fuel on the idle to 1/4 throttle. Mine starts easy, it just wont start without touching the throttle if it has sat for about 1/2 hour on a warm day.

Also mine is lean too, Perfect white plug with 115 Main and #38 Pilot jet. And I have changed the things you mentioned too and Carb cleaner all over the carb does not make it change RPM.

My DR650 uses a #42 Pilot Jet and it is 3x larger displacement. I think the #38 is just too big for the 250. just my opinion but when I take the carb apart it is wet inside, and my Float valve is not leaking and the Float height is within spec.

I read these messages about the 54B and I really do feel like crying. I don't think my new bike will ever start.I don't know how to do all this stuff. none of it. The bike is brand new, the gas gauge doesn't work. The engine tries to turn over but won't. I think I got a lemon and I don't have any way to fix it. I am royally screwed. What a waste of money. Yes, I am depressed. Anger will be coming shortly. If I can't get it started soon, an attorney will be my next step.

Unfortunately getting and attorney will end up costing more than the bike is worth. What you need is someone local who can offer some assistance. All the things you mentioned are common with a shipped scooter that hasn't had a PDI done on it. If you were nearer to me I would help you out, alas see if there is someone close to you that is on the board. As far as hard starting when cold I found the problem being lack of fuel in the bowl and a cantankerous fuel pump. I suffered with that problem for a very long time even changed the fuel pump to a Mikuni DF-44 and it still wouldn't start easily when cold. I bet it's a fuel issue and to prove it simply take the breather off the back of the carb and put several drops of gas in the carb. If it starts then you've found your problem. I ended up putting the original fuel pump back on and rerouting my fuel and vacuum lines and using a single vacuum port on the carb that goes to the fuel pump. Now it starts first time, everytime.

gmoney, I had changed those vacuum lines the first week I had the scooter. I used the top nipple and ran it directly to the fuel pump. Now after the change in fuel pump and a slight adjustment on the rich side of the A/F screw it started on the 5th time. Almost started on try #4. I too installed the DF-44 pump. Since this is always a morning issue for the scooter or first try to start after it's been sitting for 12 or more hours I made a second 1/8 turn on the rich side of the carb. Once again another wait to try it out.

As far as Seafoam goes I have used it from day one. I always add an ounce per each gallon of gas I put in. It is a habit of mine.

There has been some improvement. After it sits for 15-30 it took throttle to start it. That problem has gone away.

Alley, this board and all the others would be blank if it were not all the piece of crap China scoots. A sucker born every day, so I would have no problem selling it. LOL

mcalli, did you receive the new battery? Or still waiting on it? When it arrives put in on the charger just to make sure you have a full charge. As far as your fuel gauge, fill it up and reset the odometer to zero. When it hit around a 120 miles fuel it back up and reset back to zero. You won't run out of gas.

Now it starts first time, everytime". You do have a 54B correct? So you ran the vacuum port which is fixed on the carb directly to the fuel pump? Wouldn't it be better to run it from the intake manifold directly to the fuel pump?

Adjust valve. I had the same problem and even worse and after many recommendation here and valve adjustment BOOM! VOOLA! starts right up.

Amazing turn of event. This morning after the scoot sat for 14 hours I was ready for the hard starting. I turned key to start position and realized I left cell phone in house. Came back out put helmet on and hit starter button. Amazingly it started right up. I was totally amazed. Gave it a minute to warm up and I was on my way.

Yup, sounds like it was a fuel delivery problem, you fixed it ,now start it and beat the snots out of it and forget about selling it.
