This is a rant! Since Some have inquired on my other post here it is in detail. Virginia has changed moped laws forcing us to register as motorcycles. They have done this as per clerk at motor vehicles in two steps. The first is if bike comes with a speedometer that is capable of registering over 30 mph it is a motorcycle. 2. If ridden on any road that has a posted speed of over 35 mph it has to be registered, inspected insured and tagged motorcycle.Resulting costs .1. register and state tag. $90 to $100 I will use $95 Local tag $10.00 Total $105. Insurance Average $120 total now $225. State inspection $18.00, total now $243.00. Next year, local personal property tax on bike= 5% of NADA Motorcycle, and they use retail, which is always high, tag $10.00 (current price), State tag $25, inspection, current $18.00 Insurance once again using $120.00 to take subsequent year to $173,before tax lets guess 30 bucks so resultant is over $200.00 each year. At $4.00/gallon thats = 50 gallons of fuel. Now further facts on this area. Many people bought mopeds to go to work at low paying jobs or to avoid taxi fees because they dont have the money, cannot get a regular job because of whatever, and live hand to mouth doing side work type things or on some form of assistance. Most bikes are bought on lay away. Many people ride bicycles but the Cops enforce the light stuff and ticket bicycle riders that dont comply at night. ( Only differance between the cops here and cons is less tatoo's). Simply put many folks can not afford any thing else. I have a frienf that bought his Wildfire to go to his second job 22 miles away, but he lost the job now because the road has 45 & 55 MPH speed limits and he is so strapped he canot do the registration.

Here in Wisconsin we have always had to Register Moped/50cc scooters and Insure as long as it is on the road you have to pay sales tax and license it. Now plate is different for 50cc compared to over 50cc. Anything over 50cc has to be registered as a Motorcycle. Cost is exactly the same. $24 for 2 years. Insurance is law here you get pulled over and do not have proof of insurance you will get a ticket. I have 2 250cc scooters my INS for both of them is $318 a year. My Dad had a 50cc it cost hims $129 a year to insure it. Now with his 250 it cost him $145 a year.

Cookees is right. Here in PA we have register/title/plate and insure even 50 cc scoots. The big difference is the operator's license. Over 50 cc's you need a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license.

Same in NY. The difference is in annual fees. I just paid $7.25 for the 50cc bikes and $17.25 for the real deals. All of them have titles and are insured.

Ohio, same as rest. If bike is on road, must be registered, licensed, insured.

I don't know where you got this information about Va moped laws but what you are saying is nothing but a rumor. I've asked my local cop friend and there is nothing to his knowledge saying that you have to register a moped. Now if the moped travels over 35mph then you have to register it as a motorcycle anything less is not required. If you can show us proof of this change show it.

In Iowa, if it is capable of going faster than 35mph, it is a motorcycle

EARTHMAN I live in SC and I sure don't pay insurance that high at all. I own a 250 CC have a motorcycle license which is required about $20.00 that goes to 2019. Paid $15.00 for property tax and my insurance is a $104.00 a year.
You are right in SC 50 cc scooters are DUI scooters. All the 50 CC owners can get made at me, but I can sure see why some motorists are fed up with following a moped doing 35 in a 55 mph speed limit road.
You will have to explain all of those fees.

Actually It was read to me at the DMV by one clerk. When I went back to get the forms the receptionist pulled it up because it is so unclear. In the section they are reading there are actually stipulations between scooters and mopeds. They are unclear to even the clerks. I was advised that the police probably do not know these laws since they have remained unchanged for years. If you want to see it go ask at the Va. DMV and get them to pull it up. If you are riding with no problems the let it lie. Reason I am so cautious is we have a town close by that one of the cops actually stops trucks pulling trailers, makes driver jack trailer and reads the ball size. Additionally they changed a speed limit from 35 to 25, posted signs for less than a week about the change, and now they are having a field day. The Sheriff's dept for the county is cool but that city has lost a great deal of revenue and the police dept has to be a self fufilling prophecy.
