So the oil seal that goes around the crankshaft on the cvt side is kaput & needs to be replaced. I've located the replacement part but don't have a clear idea of how to replace it (i.e. do I need to disassemble the engine block or can I just remove the kick start sprocket?)
If any of you experts out there don't mind providing the newbie w/ a tutorial or pointing me in the right direction to find the info I would much appreciate it.
This is for a 150cc gy6, 157qmj.
Thanks in advance!

If it the leftside (longer case part where belt transmission mech is) you will need to pull the outer cover and the entire variator assy and gear off to get at the seal. If its on the right outer crank case the flywheel will need to be taken off with a flywheel puller to get at that sides seal. You will need an 8mm socket with extension for the bolts on both sides aswell as a 10mm and a phillips screwdriver for the outter cooling shell that is around the engine and also for the fan on the flywheel. An electrical 1/2" impact wrench is a lifesaver getting off the nut that holds the variaitor on. This is a good forum for getting help ! No dumb questions to worry about either ! Bill C.

If it's the flywheel side you need a special flywheel puller too, it's L/H thread.

It's on the variator side of the engine. What I really am getting at is once I get the variator off & the gear sprocket then what?
Can the new seal be simply pushed around the crankshaft or is it more complicated?

You will likely need a puller to get that gear off the variator shaft... www.zaksatvzone.com/timing-gear-puller-p-12743.htmlShop around you can get them cheaper ... People have tried other pullers but they often end up damaging the shaft... etc. When you re-assemple the variator use a torque wrench on the variator bolt, NOT an impact wrench. The impact wrenches drives the starter gear too far up the tapered shaft and you will never get it off again with ANY puller.. basically the engine is junk...
