I just read the Yamaha YP250 service manual as it pertains to transmission oil changes. They say to use 10W30 motor oil. Does that apply to our 250s?
The label on my scooter says use GL-3 gear oil.

I use Mobil 1 75W 90 and it works fine. All you need is 7 oz.

I went with 75W90.
Somewhere I was reading about gear oils (I don't remember where) and they explained the difference between the GL standards. I think it was GL-5 that was not good for yellow metals like brass bushings. They said it was important to use the right spec. For instance, when I worked on and raced Dodge Neons, the manual transaxle oil spec'd was ATF+4

Either is perfectly fine. 10-30 motor oil is actually of similar viscosity as 75-90 gear oil (you can't compare numbers directly across oil type..) The additives in car oil are null and void for the gears in our scooters, so it's a completely valid substitute. See the chart at the link below: www.vintagetriumphregister.org/maintain/oil-overview.shtml[edit] - Here's a good chart:

I use Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 - .25L or 8.45 ounces and usually change it when I change the oil since it takes so little.

This may be true for our particular Chinascoots, but if our riders on the other side of the pond ride Yamaha Majesty 250s, the service manual clearly states 10W30 motor oil for the transmission. Always use the manufacturer recommended fluids. In my case, I went with GL-5 75W90 gear oil. The label on the scooter said GL-3, but I can't find that specification anywhere in town.

Just a note ..... gear oil is not motoroil....I used 85W90 wt gear oil.....has been used for ages....the transmission knows the difference.....like strange noises coming from behind your seat.....will tell you..enjoy the ride.... Our scooters (Chinese scooters) do not have a transmission.. they're just gears in a static configuration, nothing else. Our "Transmission" is a CVT, which isn't even oiled either (which is why "motorcycle oil" does not benefit us one bit). 10-30, 10-40, or 75/90 gear oil will all work fine in the rear-end. Heck even pure Lucas Oil would probably be fine. You're just keeping light lube on the gears back there, a very very small amount. The gears in these China scoots really aren't doing that much work. If you want to play it safe (like I do), just go with 75/90. Also, take the Chinese recommendations with a grain of salt. Usually you say "go with OEM recommendation" ..... not necessarily the case with these China scoots lol!

yoster: Now we're getting down to semantics. CVT = continually variable transmission. It transmits power from the engine to the rear wheel. So in reality, it is correct to call it a transmission. When one starts choosing oils to work with gears, you do have to take into consideration the types of metals involved and the kind of forces taking place. Granted, our scooters are quite basic, and that is why I went with the consensus and used basic 75W90.

When bhinch said "transmission" he was referring to the gears in the back-end, not the CVT. I used the same term to compare apples to apples, but then clarified after the first sentence that our transmission is actually a CVT.

In any event Turtle you have the right gear oil.
