I found this and I'm wondering if anyone knows much about them. I've seen side mount boxes for 49cc engines but never for a 150cc. Would this help in remedying my problem of getting oil into my stock air box and ruining my filters? I don't know anything about it so I am looking for any way to solve the issue. Alleyoop suggested I put a breather filter on my oil vent line to prevent it from getting into the air box, but if this does the same thing or similar, I'd rather have an OE style fix than something rigged up myself. Thanks for any and everything you can add!

Originally I didn't like the side mount air box. However, in the past year I've been converted and now prefer them. They're easier to work on and to clean up excess oil. Also, you get rid of the stupid serpentine airhose and ridiculously cumbersome airbox. You don't need a slight vacuum on the crankcase breather so you can skip the part of the system that pulls oil into the filter. Just use an oil catch can or tie the vent tube off high enough so that it doesn't dribble out. I have run his type of system on my scooters for years and never had any problems, but I change my oil quite obsessively. Sprocket will disagree on this to some degree do to water sludge getting back into the engine. Personally, I think this sublimates off and escapes through the vent tube. Plug the opening where the crankcase beather fits in and you should be go to go. Rich

Rich Rich, I don't really want to high jack this thread, but do you have any pictures of how the side mount air box mounts?

If you are getting oil in the air box, you likely have to much oil in the engine... it should only require 750 ml or 26 oz. about 3/4 of a quart of oil...
If the oil is not overfilled you may have worn rings and something called 'blow-by'...
On a good engine you should get about 1 ounce of milky watery oil a week. The oil comes from the valve cover vent hose... you can just stick it in a can to catch the oil and water...or I have it tied up high on the frame with a gas filter stuck on the end. Seems to work OK , but check the gas filter every oil change to be certain the oil doesn't block it.
Like Rich I like the side air boxes that use a washable foam filter. Really easy to maintain and clean...also holds the carb in place and stops it moving around like when people use a UNI or K&N filter

Thanks for the replies.
I would also like to see some photos or instructions on how to mount this air box.
My original air box is now ruined so I must replace it.

Well, I just bought one of the above referenced side air boxes from Scrappy. Didn't fit at all and I don't see how it will possibly fit a GY6 150cc long case. This must be for short cases. I'm going to return mine.

Crap.
Well, the one I ordered should be here tomorrow so I guess I'll find out then...
I've looked EVERYWHERE for these and Scrappy had the best price... but NOWHERE could I find installation instructions or fitment specifications.

it hooks to the carb, & then to one of the case bolts and kind of lays above the engine and CVT

Looks similar to the one on my Adly. Mounts on top of the CVT. Air snorkel routes in from the left and attaches to the rear of the carb. Attachments:

Comes in from the left side through the frame to the rear of the carb. Don't know how to post more than one pic per post. Attachments:

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I thought he was curious about how side mount airboxes work in general. I didn't know y'all were researching one in particular. My bad, Rich

I had one of the exact boxes pictured by scrappy as OE on my 1P57QMJ engine. Fits just fine, and did a decent job after some modification to open up the flow a bit. Uses the triangle paper filter with foam wrap. Has a small chamber to collect oil and a drain tube. No reason not to use this if you're using this box, as it works well. Good luck mounting a catch can if you've got one of these behemoths grafted on too. Mounting is similar to runningslow's positioning, although his box is different.

Just want to correct, that's not my box in those pictures. That is Rich's. I was quoting his post. I ordered one just like the one in the original post, from Scrappy. It will not fit my scooter. Those of you say it fits (which I don't doubt you one bit), do you have long or short case motors? Because, if you have long cases, it could just be another quirk of my QMK motor. I think my CVT cover may be interfering some, but I thought my bolt pattern was the same for the cover as a long case. Perhaps I should take a picture with it with the bike show what I'm taking about.
