So, I am very new to the scooter world. A few months ago I purchased a used Daelim S2 250. It was very cheap, high miles, just as a starter scooter so I could see if I liked it. Well, I loved it.
I however, know nothing about scooters. Maintenance, etc - nothing. There aren't many places who will go near it around here either, I've called around. Mostly because it's Korean made I believe. I didn't expect this scooter to last forever of course, but it's having a problem and I wasn't quite sure where to turn, or whether it was an easy fix, or if I should just scrap it.
I was riding it from work yesterday, and maybe got about a good mile or two, and came to an intersection. I stopped, as normal, and when I went to pull out into traffic, it didn't accelerate faster than maybe 5-10 miles per hour. I turned the throttle, and I can hear the engine roaring (as loud of a roar as it can give.. it being a scooter and all) but it would not go any faster. So I cut back on the throttle, as I didn't want to further break anything, and I coasted along the road. Thank god the ride home was only a few more miles, and all down hill, so I coasted pretty well. I could turn the throttle slightly to slightly increase speed but that's about it, if I turned it any further it wouldn't accelerate and I just heard the engine.
I parked it in the garage and left it until today. I started it back up (it starts fine.. sounds the same, aside from the fact it won't go). Tried to move it, and the same thing.. I can only move at about 5 mph.
Any ideas?
It was pretty windy and cold, but I am not sure if that could contribute.
I once got stuck in a pretty wicked rainstorm and the bike shut off on me, but I let it dry out and it worked fine. That was a month or so ago. That's about the only problem I've had with it.
So, I'm pretty much looking for ideas on what it could be. I would hate for it to be something super simple, and get ripped off if I could find someone to fix it. Or if it were something simple I could possible tackle myself, if there were other web forums with guides or anything. There isn't much out there about Daelims I've found out.
Any help would be appreciated!! Thank you!

If you twist the Throttle and the engine REVS up and it is not going anywhere or very slow then it points to the CVT area. The Variator is not working right and the weights are worn or stuck and not pushing out the Variator or your Clutch may be slipping or your belt is worn down. If you have tools you can take the CVT COVER off and take pictures and maybe a VIDEO and we can probably tell you what may be the problem in there.
Here is what I am talking about:

You should be able to convince a mechanic to fix the transmission their abilities. Anyone who's competant can examine and diagnose the problem.
They're very simple machines compared to the modern motorcyckles they usually work on.
How near is a shop? Usually they send a trailer, pick it up and fix it. These guys are going into winter and they need your business. tell them you'll pay their rate to open it up and diagnose it, then you can order the parts for them to install.
If you are comfortable doing the work, then by all means, proceed, but you can have it done for a fee, I'm sure. If you call a Yamaha shop, tell them it's a Yamaha, a Honda shop, Honda. I trpolly just needs a belt after all those high miles, $150 bucks installed would be fair, less would be better.
Are you a mechanic?
Yes.
My scooter won't go, can you fix it?
Oh, no, I don't work on scooters.
But you said you're a mechanic, I want you to work on my scooter, you have tools, you can figure it out, What do you get, 60 bucks an hour, OK, I'll pay that, but you gotta get started, ready, go, I'm paying for this, now open up that CVT cover, there's a belt, a variator and a clutch in there, see what's wrong with it.
Hurry up, it won't go, and I have ship to do.
I'm sorry, I'll just go wait over here

I agree with Alley it's probably the CVT. Here's a link to the KidNME page on CVTs. It has several excellant how-tos and videos on CVT maintenance and repair. I also agree with ce, you should give it a go working on your scooter. It's very hard to find a technician to work on these things that knows what they're doing and usually they rip your eyes out. Remember when it was darn near impossible to find a mechaninc for your car that you could trust? It's like that now with scooters. We have a member, jhbietz, that's a scooter mechanic that I would trust with my scooter in a heartbeat. Guys like him are few and far between though I'm afraid. Rich

Hi guys -- I appreciate the replies. I have been researching everything I can about CVT and am learning a lot. Here is a picture I took after I got the cover off, and also here is a link to a video I took. Not sure if any will be of help. I didn't get a chance to take off the variator, as I do not have an impact wrench and can't seem to get it off any other way. A friend of mine is going to let me borrow his this weekend, and I can post more pictures then. Any ideas from this picture/video though? Attachments:

Yes, your belt appears to be REALLY STRETCHED NOTICE how it hangs down and how high it is on the FRONT PULLEY. It appears you need a new Belt and a CORRECT BELT at that, I think they put on a TO LONG OF A BELT instead of buying the right length belt for it. Look at this BELT on the CVT notice the difference, the belt is tight, low in the FRONT PULLEY and not bowed like yours. Yours is bowed on top and hanging down on the bottom and is sitting high in the FRONT PULLEY. Not a big deal you just need a Good New Belt. Look at the belt on top it should have the SIZE PRINTED on the belt and let us know what size it says. It should be something like 835-20-30, 842-20-30,856-23-30,918-22.5-30 Alleyoop Alleyoop

That's a Kymco variator but it may be correct for the Daelim, though. For having high miles it sure is clean in there, and that belt looks new, so someone was in there, and it looks like they put the wrong belt.
Well done getting that cover open, and forget what I said about strong arming some mope to work on it. You're perfectly capable of fixing it on your own, and we are all impressed and willing to help any way we can.
Hit that variator nut 3 times with the impact wrench and it should spin right off. Then pull off the fan and free the belt, then slide the variator off and open it to see if the rollers are in good order. You'll need to measure them, they'll be 20mm x 12mm or 18mm x 14mm or 23 x 18 or 20x15, then weigh them and they'll be 16 gram or 14 gram each, then the easy part is to count them, there'll be either 6 or 8.
The rollers may be new as well, but be sure they fit the variator, as they may be the wrong size as well.

so why would a scooter that "was working fine" all of a sudden not go if is was a wrong belt?

Maybe a V-guide got chewed up and a roller turned, or the high miles rollers are still in there.
Just gotta open it up and see what's going on.
Research reveals that the Daelim does have a Kymco engine, so belts and rollers are available, but we need to know which engine, the one used in the Grand Vista, Bet'n Win, People, or Exciting

Drjeff, Belts can go at anytime, espeically cheap belts they stretch like crazy, but yours appears to be the wrong size just by looking at it. It was probably little tighter when it was brand new but with the heat it creates in the CVT if it is not a good belt they will stretch like a rubber band. So now you know your problem get a correct belt and BY THE WAY WHAT SIZE does it say on that belt? You have to ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS to give you some good advice. Alleyoop

Hi alleyoop, I haven't managed to get at the belt yet. I tried to read off of it while it was still on, but I couldn't make it out. A friend of mine was supposed to let me borrow his impact wrench this weekend, but I'm not quite sure that is going to happen - there's a Nor'easter heading right my way and it's calling for 8-10 inches of snow! If I don't get the wrench this weekend, I'll pick it up Monday after the snow clears I'll post as soon as I get the belt size.. and pictures of the variator and rollers once I get inside there.

The numbers may be on some other part of the belt you may see it once you take it off. But it sure is stretched like a rubber band, which will cause what is happening no exceleration belt is not turning the Clutch pulley.
SNOW SNOW!! WHAT 8-10 inches that is a BLIZZARD!! do not be saying that, it is to EARLY FOR ALL THAT WHITE STUFF. Alleyoop

I do see how stretched out it is compared to what it's supposed to look like. Does that seem normal though, that it was riding fine, and then I came to a stop and it didn't want to work anymore? I'm just ready to get that wrench and get it fixed asap.. not like it matters since the snow is here! A Blizzard is sure what it feels like... it's coming down pretty steady here. Discouraging since I was planning on getting a few more days for riding (bundled of course!). Way too early for this kind of snow. Attachments:

I am by no means an expert banana, but (IMO) I believe alleyoop was correct about the belt not riding fully in the bottom of the variator pulley! Maybe one or more of the rollers/sliders (or u shaped slides) has become dislodged and now the variator is stuck (open), a little bit. This will make the scooter take off real slow and most likely buck or want to die when stopped. Kind of like trying to take off in second gear with a manual transmission.
Yesterday I rode my scooter 16 miles on the interstate, and when I came to a stop, my scooter was bucking and wanting to die/quit. When I went to take off the scooter would go real slow, until about 10 miles an hour, then it ran fine as long as my speed stayed above 10-15 miles an hour. When I took my CVT cover off and looked at what was going on, it looked a lot like your video. The variator is jammed open, about 1/2 in., and the rollers/sliders (or U shaped slides) will not allow the variator to close. A closed variator would allow the belt to ride in the smallest area of the pulley but since the belt is riding higher in the front pulley it will ride lower in the clutch pulley making the clutch engage while sitting still. Centrifugal clutch! This is really bad for the belt!!
I am guessing about the cause of the stuck variator! I, also, can't remove my variator nut to verify the cause of the problem! I put a small amount of blue loctite on the nut, when I had it off a few months ago, and now even with a compressor and an impact driver I can't remove the nut! Story of my life, (insert...long sigh here!).
Good luck with your scooter! (Wow, that's a lot of snow! Pretty but..... yuck!) winchesterboy
