Some one should make a kit to service the gy6 that contains tools including a decent vom along with basic instructions on the use of a meter. any one who owns a gy6 should have a meter for sure. just because the wiring looks like it is place doesn't mean there is continuity. measure it! john

I have a 50 year old vtvm and probably 5-6 digital meters! plus a tectronics oscilloscope just in case I would want to look at a wave form coming off a stator or coil!

It's probably a bogus connection upstream somewhere. As someone else who posts here discovered, Bajas weren't put together with the best plugs and assembly line care.

your bad connection should be pretty easy to ferret out. these scooters are built with old technology and are really pretty simple to work on. If they were built the same as a brand new honda or yamaha scooter most of us could not afford to own one and looking at signatures a lot of us own 3 and 4 of them. just take your time and go over it thoroughly. john

What do you mean by the tail light? The light over the license plate or the brake lights...
What kind of socket is it? does it have one contact or two? Sometimes people use the wrong bulbs... single contact in a double contact socket...

yes the running red tail light and brake lights are not working at all this is the link for the manual any diagnosis of electrical part that would cause this would be a great help as i am fairly new to the scooter world www.fastrixx.com/baja/1.%20Price%20Lists,%20Parts%20Lists%20and%20Schematics/Baja/Scooters/SC125%20Zongshen%20Sun%20City%20125cc%20Scooter%20(VIN%20PREFIX%20LZST).pdf

Well I guess you figured out by now the guys are suggesting that you get a multimeter if you don't have one. And they are correct, you do need one if you're going to work on a scooter. The brake light and tail light run are two seperate circuits that end up at the tail/brake light bulb. Since neither is working most likely the connector running to the light is bad. You can see the connector on the diagram that our buddy Niedzwiedz posted. The part on the link you posted is the entire harness for the scooter. Coming off the back of that should be a short connector that looks something like this:
That's for a turn signal so it's not exactly the same, the one to the brake/tail light will have three wires. The brake light wire is almost always yellow/green and the ground is always green. The tail light wire is usually brown but I think Bajas can be a little hinky on that. Some Bajas have two bulbs in the rear lens and that may confuse things. You will need to remove the connector from the bike and test it for continuity with a multimeter. It's probably a bad ground since both lights aren't working. Test the green wire to the metal ring that fits on the base of the bulb for continuity to the end of the green wire. The tail light wire runs to the center of the connector and the brake light wire is off center, test them also. Here is a link to a turn signal troubleshooting tutorial PDF. About halfway through it I talk about multimeter testing and checking the rear lights. Read that through and see if it helps. Let us know if you're still having problems. Rich

Make it easy on yourself, buy a cheap PROBE: www.delcity.net/store/Battery-&-Voltage-Analyzer/p_10237.a_1Hook the ground wire to a bolt or anything going to the frame or even the negative post on the battery if it is near. Then probe the Wires going to your Socket right before the socket. If it lights up you have juice which will tell you its bad connections in the socket, bad bulb, bad socket etc... If it doesn't light up then check by the handlebars to see where your looseing the juice. Also did you try BOTH brakes? Alleyoop
