I have just about 200 miles on my 5 month old Magnum. This will be the 3rd time I adjust the chain, This time the the slack is big. Should I forgo the tightening and get a new chain? Adjusting the chain is a pain in the butt I'd like to reduce the number of adjustments I have to make. I won't ride it until I adjust it or get a new chain. Your thoughts will be welcomed. To get the size for a new chain do I take the old one off and measure it?

Hey Ger, when I picked up my Magnum from Jim it need a new chain. As I remember he ordered a long chain from Yamaha and measured and cut it from that. I think he also added a half link to get it to it's minimum possible length. I would suggest you give him a shout just to double check.

All you have to do is count the pins and get one that has at least the same number of pin counts or greater. Most chains will have more pin count so you will have to cut to length so also get a chain breaker. Alleyoop

Ger....Do not put the same type of chain back on it or you will have the same problem. Take that old chain off go get a motorcycle chain for it, I am leaning to a o=ring type. That chain that is on there now can be purchased in any farmers supply and most haedware stores. They use the chino chains on bailers and other farm machines that normally have loaded adjusters on them. It is so cheap you get a 10 ft long chain for $28... Also make sure you have the rear sproket aligned a good as you can, change the spacer if you have to as it will cause you a lot of problems

How do the sprockets look? They may be wearing out a little. Is it possible the adjustments are slipping? Is The chain out of alinement? Or just cheap chain? I have a little over 1k miles on mine and only adjusted the chain once. It still has about 1/2" slack. I keep it lubricated good also. But will replace it with better chain.

I disagree, the reason chains were out sprockets on two wheels is that the sprockets have no play in or out whatsoever. So not haveing any play the front and rear sprockets have to be RIGHT on otherwise the chain will be rubbing on the sides of the sprocket teeth and wearing them out. Alleyoop

Yupper...That is why on the trike when the chain is loose you can really feel it and hear it if you are not right on, I have found close is not good enough

Sprockets look good and does too. I went to Cycle Gear for a chain guy aid my chain looked good why replace? I told him about the streaching. Too bad he didn't have the size I needed. Yahama wouldn't return my calls I guess I'll have to order online.

Tuesday I'll try to get it back on the road.

Chain is a DID Xchain. Got it on this afternoon and then the rain started. Garage is too warm to work in when he door is closed. Tomorrow it's tighten it up and get it square. I'm sure some choice words will be flowing tomorrow in Plantation, FL.

Was nice here today Ger, I went out and pulled the fuel trottle out of the Magnum. Have to pull it to the front and out, tied a cor to it so can pulle the new in, will go in the morning and see if I can find one. Probely a standard 250 cable but they can match it up or if I have to I can order one
