I am waiting on my new timing chain to come in from MBE and I hope it will be here tomorrow. Do I need to have the crankshaft gear pressed back on? I am asking because kick starting this engine will probably not happen.

So even if I torque the variator down I still need it pressed. That is not going to be a problem but I would like not having to go thorough the hassle of taking it back to the shop and all that jaz BUT at this point I will do what is needed.

I think just tigthen up the Variator presses it back on, the part of the shaft the gear goes on is tapered. Alleyoop

Alley is right get in on far enough and the variator will move it up the tapered shaft. Many people use an impact wrench on the variator nut and they drive that gear so far up the shaft they will never get it off...I have seen cases cracked this way also...
So use a socket set and a torque wrench...

hhhmmm i may have to torq it down next time, usually i let my dad snug it up with the impact since he knows better than to break it off or stripe the threads or over tighten. It seems there is much less to go wrong torqing it down, the problem is holding it perfectly still while torqing.

You can't guess on torque and most people over torque with an impact wrench.. they are terrible for this application...and you will drive the kickstarter gear so far up the crank taper you will never get it off...
I have seen it ..oh about 300 times...the engines are basically finished... when this happens...
