Burning oil at 1100 miles By beachbum (Read 1,162 times)

Man, I only have 1100 miles on my scoot and it is burning oil. I kept smelling it every time I stopped, but I thought it was the car in front of me and then it turned and I smelled it at the next light. I put my hands down by the exhaust for a smell test and sure enough it was me.

I hope it doesn't get too bad. Now I am for sure bringing this thing out to our vacation house in Lake Havasu.

Check compression. If it is good it good possibly has bad valve stem seals. But still could be rings. Is there a lot of blow by out of the crank case vent?

Is it going down by the dipstick or are you just smelling it?

My scoot was using oil, went by to 10w40, now its staying steady on the dip stick, it all depends on the oil, it seems certain oil the scoot don't like.

Yah, its coming from the exhaust.

It just started the other day, so it would be hard to see if the oil level is down at this point.

My new engine only has 74 miles & it's burning oil too. What weight oil did you change to? Do you use restiline? Oil additive?

Sean, a new engine will burn some oil until the rings seat. Keep your eye on the dipstick, a little oil use at this point is normal. Even a small amount of oil burn will produce a lot of smoke, keep that in mind. Check your compression, if it's 150+ just wait and see how it shakes out by 500 miles. Rich

dont forget to break it in nice and easy, these small motors wont tolerate a bunch of rough housing especially during the break in period.
