It's really pretty but for 12K I'd go for the Beemer, it's actually cheaper.Aprilia SRV 850 BMW 650s

No more a motorscooter than a motorized wheel chair is a motorscooter. My majesty is not a scooter as far as I am concerned either. In my opinion the first thing about a scooter is step through construction, an inch of hump on the floor is one thing, but I have seen small motorcycles with less to climb over and easier to mount than that thing.

As far as I am concerned the big bike companies have determined that there is a crap load of yuppies and the like that have never had a 2 wheel vehicle because they are too stupid to learn how to shift and work a clutch but have plenty money and the bike makers are wanting to cash in on them. If I was to want to travel and go a long distance I would get a road bike or a big trike. A scooter you can't put a case of coke on the floor boards just ain't a scooter period.

Not to start another crazed discussion about it but Americans don't shift. The bike companies know that if they want to entice another segment to spend money they have to pander to it. You're right. A chain driven 850cc "scooter" is just an automatic bike. To the people who buy them it's just a rose by another name. Once the Big Four jump on this it will be all over for the Europeans. Look at the new Honda crossover. It will probably wail and cost thousands less with its DCT.

One other thing, I don't believe there is such a thing as a touring scooter. A scooter is the vehicle to scoot from here to there, heck even the gas tanks on most are not designed for a long haul. A scooter to me is some thing I can ride in total comfort for an hour or so. Climbing over a hump sucks, big wheels work better at high speeds like expected out of a motorcycle and little ones are highly maneuverable such as found on real scooters. A 200cc maybe even up to 300cc scooter with a conventional 1 piece body preferably aircooled with a flat floor board that could cruise at 60 and 12-13" wheels is my ideal "scooter" You don't get the power or ecomomy with air cooled but is so much simpler and a decent aircooled engine can run every bit as long as a watercooled. john

I agree, the nomenclature on scooters has spiraled out of control. Not to hijack this thread but this seems like a good place to state this....you can report me to the admin. A scooter scoots from place to place in a small town or downtown setting, that's what the name defines. The bigger machines that can cruise for long distances have below board tanks with fuel pumps. The longer the distance the less step through it is. BMW doesn't even try to call theirs scooters, they're urban transports. I'm not sure I like that name but it's a helluva lot better than scooter for a 650cc 60HP machine that can pop 100 MPH. I think we need new names for all the classes of scooters, suggestions? Rich

Scootercruiser, and if you hang satchels on it, Scooterbagger, with a springer seat, it becomes a Bobberscooter, unless it's painted flat black and all scuffed and rusty, then it's a Scooterrat.

Rich Since they're being sold to yuppies (who live in McMansions.) How about Motorcycle + Scooter or a McScooter? or maybe a yupooter? Or even Pseudoscoot?
