Hi and my scoot i have to pull in the brake lever to kick start i'd advise against using the lick starter too much on these chin scoots they are more for Emergencies only and if you break/shear it its a PIA to repair. terry

No, you do not need to squeeze the brake to kickstart a scooter. Squeezing the brake sends the juice to the brake lights and to the RELAY(Solenoid) to send juice to the starter. Alleyoop

Hi Alley not saying yer wrong but mine i got it lit after grabbing the brake lever. but maybe i was not hammering/kicking hard enough (coz im paranoid) of tearing up the kickstarter. but it did fire off. i'm not contradicting YOU Admin Zenmaster. terry

I have to hold the brake lever on mine too. I know because I was having problems for about a week and probably kickstarted (or tried to) about 40 times till I solved the staring problem.

If there was a safety lock out, such as a coil ground, that makes you pull in the brake to fire, the bike would die as soon as you let go of the brake. All pulling in the brake does is energize the starting circuit, it has nothing to do with the ignition system. I gotta agree with Alley on this one and not just because he's staff. I'd be interested to hear hypothetical wiring scenarios that would account for this.

The older vespa's are all kickstart only. It was the norm till the Vespa PX series when Piaggio added the electric starter mechanism . The outer gear is on the outter edge of the flywheel . my 2 cents worth . will

Shalom72c, So what does that have to do with the question at hand? They are not Piaggios or Vespas they are your everyday china scoots and have electric start.
Now the old MOPEDS with a crank up kickstarter YOU HOLD THE BRAKE in pump up the SPRING and RELEASE the brake and it spins the motor. Alleyoop

As been said all the brake can do is complete the starter circuit allowing the solenoid to turn on the starter motor. Ignition is completely different.

perhaps the slight drain the brake light gives the battery allows for the coil to be not so hot? lol. can i shoot in the dark or what?
