Just a note to all. The night before last, the sirens over at the fire house went off. We turned the scanner on and the call out was for a motorcycle accident about a mile away. It turns out that the guy down the street was riding home after dark and a deer jumped out in front of him. He managed to miss it but ran his Harley into a ditch and went down. He wasn't seriously injured but was in the hospital overnight for observation.
We don't have a lot of deer around here but there are lots of cornfields and they aren't harvested yet.
Watch out for leaves too!
Be careful my friends!

Agree on both problems.
Leaves on the street are bad when dry, but when wet, they are very slippery. And where do wet leaves like to gather? They lay in waiting on corners and near curbs, just waiting for me to round the corner. Slow down and stay safe.

With the weather this summer so hot and dry, the deer are out just about at all times looking to feed. The guy who I sold my 1200cc bandit hit a deer with it 2 months ago, cutting the deer in half and he lived to tell of it. He was going about 85 and the bike still runs. Bent it all up though and if it were still mine I would cut it in half with a saws all to make sure no one gets killed trying to ride it. At night I generally see any where from2 to 20 deer when i am coming home in a distance of up to 25 miles. A couple poachers in the back of a pickup going slow could fill the truck with deer in a couple hours around here. john

Richard - if you're riding from the E-burg campus, that is really scary!
We're having heavy rains today. I just got back from town and there are tons of leaves on the roads + oil/detergent. Bad, bad, bad. News says that there are a lot of truck accidents up around Harrisburg. I-83 was closed and traffic was backed up on the Turnpike.

I have ridden a rural route to work for many years. I've had several very close calls with deer. I tried the whistle type deer avoidance systems and they did nothing. Studies done on these found the same thing. I thought I might try one of the electronic type. Does anybody know something about them? Click on the pic below for a link:
