I looked around but no one seems to be building a rear rack for the Rowdy.....I never carry any passengers anyways so I thought a rear rack would be more useful than the fold down passenger seat. After looking at atv racks for ideas for most of the winter I drew up what I thought mine should be. A few hours....or was it days.....in the shop and it is done. I used common conduit straps that clamp around the rear passenger handles to secure the rack to the scoot. They provide a rock solid mount for the rack. And finally, I was in a local thrift store and ran across this file storage box. In its original configuration it had broken locks and was approx 2" too tall. Again, a few hours in the shop and it was 2 inches shorter, reinforced the corners, added a bottom and a new key lock. While I was at it, I changed out the lock on the side storage box so both now have the same key. Still need to finish the small luggage carrier rack I want to add to the top of the storage box. I picked up some steel tube this afternoon for it and have a plan drawn so it won't take too much to get it done and mounted.

I keep my toolkit in it along with raingear and reserve the rest of the room for whatever "finds" I may see at the various garage sales, flea mkts, etc that I may run across during a days ride. Also I really needed a place to carry a small amount groceries home....The Rowdy doesn't have a standard seat bucket for such items. I wanted a Gold Wing or HD Tour Pak type of luggage to put on the back but they were out of my $$ league and when I ran across this at a 2nd hand thrift for $10 I thought why not....it will work in the interim if not indefinitely . If I eventually run across the other type in my travels for the right price I may pick it up as they are about 22" wide and would provide a lot more room for "finds". It is also why I made my rack that width. Read more: www.scooterdoc.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=customscootsmodsetc&thread=7783&page=1#ixzz2RXT8aFDz

I can't say for sure, but if I remember right those conduit clamps are galvanized. For paint to adhere properly you need to apply a certain type of acid to it first. Don't know what type. I'm sure home depot can tell You. Good idea. Oh make sure you follow the instructions on can!!

Great looking rack. Paint the clamps like the rest and it will look OEM Thanks for the compliment. I've been waffling on how I want to proceed with the clamp color....It is between a black powercoat which is supposed to stick to galv and a shiny black vinyl dip coating similar to what is on tool handles..... I'm leaning toward the latter as it will pad the clamp and should also look "original". It is SO nice to now have a rack and storage on the scoot.

Just wanted to post an update on the rear rack and storage box....This is the latest iteration and as with most projects, is a work in progress... I'm real happy with how it turned out and the backrest just can't be beat. I also built and added a front cargo carrier to the Rowdy. Here is a picture of that creation. I found a really nice camera bag at a local thrift store for $3. At that price, even though it was blue, I bought it for use on the front. Hopefully I will somehow be able to dye it black as it is the perfect size. Here is a picture of that: So with these two additions I now have the cargo carrying capacity that I want.
