Was looking at County Imports site. They have some nice quality 49cc bikes.
Why are the descriptions of the same 49.6 cc engines different on some models? Theres different HP and TQ ratings as well as the rpms for the Hp and TQ. How is this possible? Are the larger HP numbers for the exact same engine being calculated differently on some models because they have a better carb? Exhaust?

Believe me, County Imports is not fact checking the copy they put on their site. Here's our Dealer Experiences on them. Enjoy the pictures they put up and take the specs with a grain of salt.

Besides many of these people are playing stupid to avoid the hassles. They advertise "Top Speed 30 mph" and we know that's not true. So they all play fast and loose with horsepower figures too. They advertise 3 horse for a 50cc engine and don't really know, but DMV offices take them at their word. In New York State a 50cc scooter is registered as a moped because anything that goes over 30 mph is a motorcycle, license and proper insurance required. I have a 50cc "Moped" and it does a wee bit more than 30 mph. I'm not telling.

Places just say that to get around the law. Fine with me! What they don't know wont hurt me!

Everything about chinese scoots are bizarre and unexplainable, it has a mind of it's own(redundancy is punishable by law,,heck!), better yet stay away from 49cc chinese scooters they are fancy scoots, 150cc up are hmmm ok to use for errands... IMOpinion ( and i'm entitled to it)

Our law is similar in VA. If it isn't over 50cc it's considered a moped and you don't have to title it, register, or have a motorcycle permit to ride it. It also states that if it goes over 35 it's considered a motorcycle. Many people in my area ride 150's and just never break 30mph. The cops around here aren't very savvy when it comes to this stuff. I don't do it personally because if I'm riding a 150cc I want to use all the speed it can give me.

China Scoots are groovy! Does anyone know the actual horsepower generated by these 50cc engines?

well, approximately 15 to 17 cubic centimeters (cc) are in 1 horsepower, so a vehicle with a 49cc engine has approximately 3 horsepower. of course kz will intentionally negate my formula to generate a debate..lol
i'm ready....back to the war zone..LOL

Thats about right and 2 lbft or tourque at 5000 rpm i believe. So any of you yahoos runing your rpms up to and over 8 grand you are going nowhere faster!
Now i had to tune my variator so that it hists 8000-8100 just off takeoff but it was necessary to keep the rpms in the mid 7s while accellerating up to 30 or so. Then it backs off while cruising.

I wonder by the end of the season how many have gone coast to coast this year. I am thinking the 50 is the toughest chinese engine built. We only hear of a few of the abused ones here. All the kids who get one and beat the crap out of them and they keep on running. The kids who have no idea of what it takes to keep one in good shape and don't care, and then they get stolen and beat up some more. john

Not only is it the toughest China engine built, there aren't too many other engines that can touch it. The $3300 Vespa 50cc is no faster and certainly no more durable. The only engines I've heard of that out do it are pricey Italian two strokes and as much as I like ring dings I wouldn't bet they would outlast a 50cc GY6.
I really liked the 50cc Lance I owned for a spell but at the time it was number 4 or 5 on the depth chart in my garage and I sold it to Madcollie who is having a ball with it. The Lance climbed to an indicated 40 mph the first time I had it running and could cruise all day at 35. It had better body panels than my 150, thicker and attached more sensibly, allowing ease of access to the motor quickly. I'd love to pick up another 50cc scooter but I'm splitting my time already between three bikes. Every so often I see a 50cc, unrunning, on Craigslist at a bargain price and would love to pick one up. Then I go out to the garage and sanity returns.

I have taken many rides over 100klm each and all at wot . My scoot starts every time , has over 4500klm and I've had no problems with it . Of the millions of scoots the chinese sell of course your going to hear from some that have had a bad experience , also over on this side of the pond you can't be like those fly by nite sellers that by a bulk of them and sell over the internet ....brick and mortar network stores is almost the only way to sell them here and you have to back them for repairers so the resellers get the higher grade scoots . Example the lowest AGM scoot they sell is 1300€ ( just over 1750 US dollars ) so the chinese scoots we do see are not that bad but rather good quality and affordable compaired to some of the competition like Aprilia , vespa, Peugeot , and others .

You have touched on the biggest weakness with Chinese scooters. People here with no mechanical ability buy them in a crate and glue them together as best they can. By golly, can you believe they fall apart on them? If they bought a BMW in a crate the result would be the same. Dealers carefully prep each name brand model they sell and still have failures. Unfortunately the hapless and unhappy Chinese scooter buyers then go and complain about it all over the web. If they had bought a Chinese scooter in a shop the results would be much different.
That's why the success rate here on this forum is much higher. The people here know, or have learned, what to do to make their Chinese scooters a viable transportation link.
