I ride in a rural area. I'm doing 30mph to 35mph and traffic is doing 55. ALL roads around here are 55mph speed limit (except in towns). Riding defensively is the only way to stay alive. If I see big rigs in my mirror, I pull off to the shoulder and stop. The wind from tanker trucks can knock my scooter over. Cars will not slow down for me, so I have to be aware of what's behind me and what's coming the other way. If cars can't pass me because of oncoming traffic, I pull onto the shoulder and stop. This way they don't try to squeeze past me and hit me.

Dan, it sounds like you're riding in an area where you shouldn't really be. Not trying to be critical, just my opinion. Try to stay safe!

No, he's just living the rural life. This is my story exactly. All roads in Rural areas are 55 mph. I ride the 150cc at 45 mph and people blow past me all the time. Heck, I ride the 250cc Fashion at 60 mph and get passed everywhere, even with solid double yellow lines on the road. I do what he does except I don't stop. I move to the edge of the road, flag people past with my hand and let them figure it out. I still have the road shoulder if I need bail out room. There are very few Police out here so it's open season. I was passed a few times on my 650 Kawasaki. I won't ride 70 on anything out here just to satisfy a few crazies.

Using your mirrors is part of awareness. Good job Dan. You have the idea down pat.

One big problem with scooters is they are generally light weight with a real low center of gravity and the wind blast from a passing semi easily can blow you just about over. One reason I would never think of putting a windshield on a small scooter, they really can catch the wind.

My majesty compared with a motorcycle is twice as easy to rock back and forth side ways while standing along side as a motorcycle of the same weight. The higher center of gravity resists side forces.

I have no choice but to ride on these roads. The side roads are dirt AND have a 55mph speed limit. My scooter tires suck in dirt (good on pavement). This is a farming area so trucks are everywhere including secondary and side roads. The box style semi's are not bad, It is the tankers and gravel trains (used by just about every farmer) that really put out turbulence.

i use lots of dirt roads too. my tires arent much good for em though if its wet. are any tires scrappy's sells good for anything but pavement? i would expect the cheapest one they got probably isnt because its probably the tire i got now. any input?

I've been looking for street/trail tires for scooters. They are not full knobbies. I had these on a couple of street/trail bikes and I liked them. No luck in finding any though.

Thx, I was hit from behind by a drunk driver 1mile from home, fractured 3 bones, can't work one of my jobs....I wear fluorescent top, reflective tapes etc.... I still get near misses....everyone is ALWAYS in a hurry....

Thanks Alleyoop. I need new tires and I want something good on street and dirt.

I also wear bright green vest or when it's really cold I wear a bright orange snowmobile suit. I have flashing red LED's on the back of my helmet. People just don't pay attention when driving.

Move up in size. Wind and trucks at high speeds on a big scooter is no problem. I run my scooter on interstates on long trips but prefer Hwys. No one has to pass me. I feel much safer on a 600cc scooter than any other I have owned. When you can move up to a larger scooter, I think a good 250cc is good for 55 - 65mph. If you want to do a lot of state to stare riding you need more power and weight.

One thing for sure is... what ever you ride be safe!
