Stay calm. Do your brake lights work? If not that could be the reason it won't crank. Try jumping the solenoid and see if it spins. The engines are simple devices, there isn't a lot that can't be fixed with a simple solution.

I warned my wife a few weeks before she passed away that if she did I was buying another bike and would take a long ride when everything settled down. Today I picked up the first part of the promise. A 1983 Kawasaki KZ750-N2 Spectre. It's a big bike, weighs 500 pounds and has a mere 80 horse at the crank. It belonged to the Uncle of the local Kawasaki dealer and has been serviced over the years. It needs a little dusting but it runs great. But. When I went to vote this evening I took the CF Moto.

The number of 250cc sellers is shrinking and it looks like even manufacturers are getting out of the size. I was looking at Znen who used to make the L Roar and the fuel injected Linhai clone. They are no longer on their product list. A quick check will show that except for a few people carrying Linhai there are not a lot of online 250s available. www.powerrideoutlet.com/scooters-mopeds/250cc-scooters-mopeds.html

Oh Tom. The scooter numbers you're posting are Motorcycle Industry Council numbers. Members include, among scooters, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Piaggio and BMW. See a common thread there? All the expensive stuff. I read somewhere that registrations of scooters in like 2013 were double those of MIC. So MIC sells about 50% of the scooters, crappy companies like Bintelli, Wolf, Lance, SYM, Kymco, Motorino and a host of online sellers do the other 50%. Let's see, hmmm. A Yamaha SMax for $4000 or a SYM HD 200 for $3400? Which would I take?
How about a cruddy Citicom for $4900 or a Honda Forza for $5800. Or maybe a Vespa 300 for a piddling $6500?
Cheap bastards like me would probably buy a Linhai 300 from John for $2800, but that's just me.

Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. It was so senseless. Sara did everything she possibly could to stave off cancer but it hunted her down. First she beat breast cancer in 2002 and then we got the news in December 2013 she had an offshoot of ovarian cancer with a 27% survival rate. She fought hard but it finally took her down. I feel worse for my two stepsons. In their early twenties and their Mother is gone. Only the good die young.

No. When I changed the tire this last time I found one of the muffler mounting points was cracked. I used JB Weld to secure it but bought a replacement to put on after the next tire.

Yes I installed the Honda shaft to circumvent future breakages. I have a Chinese shaft on the shelf as a spare. The $570 carburetor is a Keihin. CF Moto uses a combination of Japanese and Chinese made parts.
Do you know how to remove the rubber bearing seal without damaging it? I would think that by pressing the bearing out by smacking the back side of it might push it out. Otherwise I would just buy a new one.

It can't be timing. It isn't like it has a distributor or flex plate that can go out of whack. Believe me, if the valve timing was out you would definitely know it. I had mine out by one tooth on my GY6 and the engine really ran like crap.
I would start the scooter and spray water mist next to the pipe while it's running to see if there's even the slightest leak anywhere. Remember that exhaust at that point is at about a zillion degrees and only needs the slightest spray to get the tire hot.

Nope. It gets warm. Keep in mind it's a ten inch donut spinning at Warp speed. I have a 17.5 mile ride home from work and do 40 mile jaunts pretty regularly. You might want to look for something rubbing or a small exhaust leak. When I first got the scooter I used to smell burning rubber when I stopped and it caused me some concern. I would check to see if the tire was hot or scuffed and it wasn't. Finally one day I noticed there was a rubber mud flap in front of the tire that had some wear on it. It's a guard to keep crap out of the engine compartment. Once I saw that I stopped worrying.
On the subject of the tail light I also compared it to my Wife's Honda Rebel parked right next to it. Mine is easily 1/2 again as big but hers is much higher. I just figure since it's a copy of the Honda Helix those Japanese guys know what they're doing so it must be OK.

I just went out and looked at my Fashion. Yes, the amber lights outboard of the red tail light don't light unless the turn signals are being used. The only problem I see is that the red tail light is kind of low but it is pretty big and at night it is lighting your license plate. In New York the plates are amber. I'm not sure but if my dusty memory is correct it's illegal in this State to have amber lights on all the time in back. Plus on both sides of the tail light are large red reflectors that would enhance the back of the bike when a headlight shines on you. Does your scooter have the red strobe bar up above the trunk lid? Mine does and I'm not a fan. I can tell it annoys people behind me and have gotten passed in some ridiculous places because of it so I know they see it. Before you go to the pain and aggravation of replacing sockets and rewiring you might want to consider either the strobe bar or silver reflective tape on top of the trunk lid.

I don't know either Borg. His message wasn't quite clear to me either. Are you saying you trust SYMs Rich? I'm not understanding your meaning.

I just found this at Modern Vespa. It pretty much sums up my riding and engine preservation philosophy.
"I've been a tech and engine design and development engineer for most of my life and as a general rule, to get the best life out of the engine, you should not regularly and continuously use more than 75% of the engines total engine revs/power for cruising. Always vary the throttle setting by partially and sometimes completely closing the throttle to suck up plenty of cooling oil around the top end of the engine. It's called mechanical sympathy...something everyone used to learn a few years back and still applies today."
