Thanks everyone!
A few questions/comments:
At 5,000 miles already appr what % of the typical clutches life have I used up already? 5% or 95%?
While it would be nice to not pull off the nut, I'm trying to picture how to replace the springs without removing the nut. How would that work? (the pictures help a lot alleyoop)
Any suggestions where to get parts in an low price way? Any Ebay experiences out there?
What other scooter models can I look for parts that can be used for this one (jcl MP250 A)?

This scooter is a JCL MP250A.
I have a Haynes scooter service manual that covers many scooter models at a high level. After reading it and some of the reference material here on Scooter Doc here is my preliminary line of thought. I'd appreciate it if you would let me know if I am headed in the right direction.
As Jct842 pointed out the spring I found is likely from the clutch. Between this and the fact that the scooter has 5,000 miles on it, and my desire to get this thing up and running as soon as possible at a reasonable cost I should probably go ahead and order a replacement clutch. I'm roughly guessing that the clutch is in the order of $100 and will take 5 days to get here. I'm not extremely confident about my ability to rebuild the clutch and while it would save a few dollars, it will likely take much longer with the scooter down.
I haven't taken one apart before, but I did watch a couple of the videos in the reference section posted by Bashan. I don't have a vice. I do have an electric impact wrench and a torque wrench. Is me being able to remove and swap the clutches a reasonable assumption?
Does anyone have any input that can point me to a reputable person on Ebay? I'd need someone who could perfectly match up my clutch the first time. It seems that this same scooter may be made under several names. I'm not confident in the other models that mine can be cross referenced to or alternatively named, Can anyone help with this?
The getting the correct part at a good price soon seems like it will take the longest. After I have ordered the replacement clutch I will remover the old one while I am waiting on the new one.
Any advice on this game plan would be greatly appreciate. If it sounds like I am off track please tell me a soon as possible before I order parts and get too far down this path.
Unless I hear otherwise from someone here today I will plant to order a new clutch today.
It would be nice to get this thing going since we only get three nice days a year to ride in Houston and I've already missed one.

I read through the manual and for the price it seems to have a lot of features.
Do the cooling vents work well?

You are correct, I copy and pasting from your note and made the mistake of leaving the 's in the search name.
My apologies.

I acquired a used scooter. I was told the belt was broken. I ordered a belt and just finished replacing it. On the rear pulley, toward the back bottom of the case a spring was between the pulley and the case. I have pulled it out. Please see it in the attached picture. I will begin researching it right away but I could use some help in identifying it and determining the importance of it not being where it should be. I’d like to learn from the collective wisdom here. Some more background. The battery was also shot. I have ordered a new one. I couldn’t test the rear wheel drive until I got the battery. It should arrive in the next few days. Can I damage anything by testing the drive with the engine while something is missing that spring? The belt was not broken. I replaced it anyway since it had 5,200 miles on it and I was there with the new belt. I am a reasonably competent mechanic with many things (cars,…). However, I have not worked on a CVT before. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

All very sage advice confirming my hunch.
Now where can I look for a HJC's IS-max or another good alternative?

I guess a lot of the ones I was seeing were HJC's IS-max 2's. I don't see very many HJC's IS-max's.
Can you give me a heads up if you see some?
How foolish would it be to buy one without trying one on? Do they fit close to the size measurements? Based on helmet measure sizes I need a large. I haven't tried one on to validate that.

Thanks Cyborg for the excellent description. It looks like that helmet runs in the $180-220 range. Are there any good ones for less money?

I am looking for a recommendation for a helmet.
I live in Houston.
The key things I am looking for are:
1) Safe 2) Good for hot humid climates 3) Protection for my face against the sum among many things (probably full face due to this) 4) Inexpensive
They are ranked by priority order. Most important to least.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

Where can I find a manual for a JCL MP-250A? Either online or paper?
Thank you.
