So I have a follow up to my leaking oil. I think I may have found my answer. When I opened up the air box I discovered some oil that wasn't there just a couple weeks ago. The black blob you see was very thick and sticky. It may have been sealant that was softened by contact with oil. When I opened up the compartment under the metal plate, this is what I saw. Notice how high up the compartment the oil either achieved or sloshed around in there. Given the amount of oil I have on my bike, I'm guessing it was close to full. With some further investigating, I removed the air box fron the scoot and low and behold the rubber boot on the exit port of the compartment was torn and I could feel it covered in oil. (Sorry about picture quality) My theory is that when I changed the oil a couple weeks ago (I posted about this) I overfilled the crank case. The excess oil exited through the ventallation tube to the air box where it accumulated and eventually ate through the high quality chinese rubber boot. Anyone ever experience anything similar to this?

Luke, I am not going to argue with you much there. I love my Chinese scoot, but if I tallied up the amount of time I have spent working on it since I purchased it I am way in the negative. As for the box, I use this scooter for work making contacts in the community. I need a place to put papers an extra helmet, jacket, tools and pretty much anything else I can find.

I thought so. My plan is to eventually install some LED lighting behind the red reflector. Maybe even hook it up to the brakes for a little more "in your face" feel.

So I am still charging my Qipai/Lifan scoot everyday and it is getting really annoying as it seems impossible to find the right R/R for my bike. I was doing a little Googling last night and came upon this post on some forum from a few years back. How much credibility should I give it and is it worth it to replace my bulbs if they are indeed 35 watt? The rest of the thread seemed to describe the problem I am having. I learned that Qipai is a subset of Lifan. LET THE GOD's SPEAK!
Update (hopefully the FINAL update) on this thread: After posting the same problem on the American Lifan forum, I got replies from Bruce at Endless Journey Cycles, and "dmoore", who works for American Lifan. They both informed me that the standard 35 watt scooter headlight bulbs are not correct, even though apparently they were being installed at the factory, and specified in Lifan parts lists. Instead, they told me to install 18 watt halogen bulbs, which I got from partsforscooters.com. These 18W bulbs have the same base and configuration as the 35w bulbs. Sure enough, when we put in the 18W bulbs, charging voltage went up to 13.6 volts at the battery, and after a test ride, the battery voltage had increased, rather than decreased. So Sprocket, if you haven't already replace the fat 35W headlight bulbs with LEDs, try the 18W halogens -- they seem to be about as bright as the 35W bulbs, and I think they have solved my charging problem.
The other good news is that American Lifan apparently isn't closing up shop like CPI, Tank, and others -- dmoore assures us that they are rebuilding their parts inventory and planning to stick around to support Lifan owners.

DrRocco, Here is what I ended up buying. It was brand new, never used from a guy on CL, $35! I love the space and have loaded it with cargo several times already. Staying within the cargo weight limitations of course.

My Starbucks would pop right out of that drink holder. Or leak. Haven't quite solved that issue yet And it won't hold my 44oz Polar Pop either! Bummer. At least it gives easy access to a bottle of water or soda. I was tired of having to get into my seat trunk to quench my thirst. Actually, I lied. this little Bad Boy does hold my full to the top 44oz Polar Pop from Circle K just fine. Of course it is a little lest risky when it is about 1/3 consumed.

Alley, I'm not sure if you saw this question. We were posting at the same time.
When I redue this, should the Variator be installed before the clutch bolt is torqued?
Also,
Do you have a pic of the oil seal?

Ok, that's what I thought. Apparently Cyborg and I are on the same plane when it comes to understanding some of your posts. haha. Sometimes I totally get it, sometimes you leave me in a cloud of Godly dust Great One. I am going to go ahead and order my 842 right now. If it fails I will hold you directly responsible and likely lose all faith in you as a Scooter Deity! And for the record, I'm cool with you treating me like a one year old scooter owner, but please just give it to me straight in a form similar to this, "Look! You little pesky SH-T! Of course you can use an 842. Can't you see you have about a mile to play with on that under utilized, after market, waste of money, performance variator you wasted your good hard earned diaper money on when you already had a 115 mm stock variator?"

I've been riding dirt bikes for years so when I got my scoot, I was using my One Industries Monster Energy logo helmet and Oakley goggles until I got a new full face for Christmas. I'm still using my FOX gloves. Usually ride in my work clothes as I commute. Otherwise it's jeans, Nike's and whatever the weather calls for up top.

#3 don't use clear RTV sealant! Red RTV Sealant is the one for this job.
Mar 25, 2014 22:45:37 GMT -7 The Great Bashan said: Have you used the clear before? The temperature parameters are Ok but it is not recommended for engine gasket applications. It's a common mistake and you can read about it right here.

Bueller here! Alley is spot on. Cyborg knows these things because he has a crank case. Did you retorque the case bolts after a few runs? I always do. I just don't put the plastic back on until....well never. That aluminum is soft and the heat and cooling changes the bolt set. Now, I'm not insulting your intelligence but I've seen the following: There are three spots that oil can come out of under the engine besides the gasket. Is your screen plug tight and is the rubber seal on it OK? How about the 17mm bolt on the left side of the engine? Does your dipstick still have the o-ring on it? Apart from that you probably have a hose off of the valve cover or the right side of the upper engine case that is the breather. It usually runs to the airbox, if it fell off it may be oozing oil underneath. I know you rebuilt the engine so you're aware of these things. I say them for tutorial purposes. One more thing, what color RTV did you use? Thank you Bashan! i torqued them to specs initially, but not after a few runs. The breather hose is attached and dip stick oring is fine. I'll check the screen oring in am. RTV was clear.
