no I was calling the other end the snorkel and the smoke is coming out from under the air box where the snorkel connects. it does look like it may have some rough edges to it so I'm going to give it the WD 40 test

Thanks Bashan, They call me sensei Pop a cap cuz i can open a beer with my iron thumb. so moving the snorkel side-to-side and seeing smoke come out does not necessarily constitute an air leak?

Did you check the exhaust and see if it was secure and had a gasket at the engine. Hmmmm..did you? We discussed this Her-yuk....at least I did. Don't make me give you a lecture....uh wait, you were practicing martial arts? Never mind...you're good. No i havnt gotten to that yet ill leave the head gasket? till Thursday. But as far as the exhasut goes do i just tighten those two big head bolts that connect it to the engine? And that's sensei pop a cap to you bashan

my scooter has been running lean since day one with backfiring, but now I'm not sure if its because all the stress of the last couple days. the exhaust pipe is rattling like crazy when I reach about 35 miles an hour and since last night the back firing sounds like a gunshot. well not a gunshot but it's pretty damn loud. I also noticed while adjusting the idle screw and pushing the snorkel, smoke comes out. it comes out of the top of the snorkel and from under air filter box

thanks pooo, I actually cranked it until the battery died.I read the idle adjustment guide and turned it two and a half turns from all the way down and it fired right up after the battery was charged. I then rode around town for about 15 minutes and came back, adjusted idle to about 1500, rode around for another 5 minutes and it was back to 2000rpms which I'm not totally unsatisfied with being that it's midnight in my lil ol neighborhood. I won't mess around with the bike until tomorrow but I'm glad I'm up and running again.
I did however grow concern for my spark plug and its compatibility with the ngk c7hsa. I cross referenced my autolite 4194 online and found that it is actually comparable to the ngk c8hsa and not the c7hsa. Is that okay? the heat range on the c8hsa is 8 as opposed to the recommended 7. I don't want to ruin anything else

It shouldn't unless you cranked it continuously. How old is the battery, if it's 3 years old it's probably toast. Did you look at Alley's idle set under Air and Fuel in the Library? Your sparkplug won't affect the battery. Do you know how to check the charging voltage? There's a couple tutorials under Electrical in the Library. yes I did crank it continuously not ignoring the 5 second rule of course but pretty much the whole time I was out there I was trying to get it started.the bike is a 2012 so I'm assuming that the battery is the same age or newer. I did look at your carb adjustment tutorial and alleys air ratio tutorial but I have not seen the charge voltage tutorial I'll check that out.

thanks guys but I have to get this thing started and home before I can do anything else.
So i went to the bike and put the battery back in after it was charged to 100%. It started a couple times but stalled out while I was trying to set the idle to 1500. the starter started moving slow again and rather than killing the starter I took the battery out and home to recharge it again, lo and behold the battery is back to 0%.
can trying to start the bike for 10 minutes kill the battery?

Sounds like alley is pointing you in the right direction you probley going to need stock jets for your carb. To much fuel can not be burnt is giving you problems I think. I am no expert like them guys alley and bashan but scooter sounds like it is flooding it self out. Good luck in school and your scooter. turns out it was a spark plug problem but since I was all ready and willing to adjust the valves and clean the carburetor before I changed the spark plugs I am going to go ahead and do those things just to get a feel for it

would a new spark plug have anything to do with a scooter battery dying?
I couldn't start the bike this morning because I forgot to turn off the alarm switch and I haven't charged the bike in about 2 weeks.like a fool I took it off of the charger early to see if that was a problem. Upon realizing it was I took the battery back inside and started charging it again and of course it prematurely fully charged and started to maintain the battery. after doing martial arts at the park for about 2 hours I tried to start the bike again with the alarm off and it would not start. and then assuming it was a spark plug a carburetor related started to Justin the idol and checking hoses and now my idol is all f***** up is there any way to or guideline for adjusting idle initially?I screwed that thing all the way in and almost all the way out. Lol then rolled it home and took off the battery to find that the battery is dead. I mean 0 percent.is there some kind of guidelines as to how far or how much turns the spark plug is supposed to be turned in? does that affect the battery at all?

It was the spark plug. Its an NGk with a bit of deposits on it. Looks like it may be fragmented over the insulation. I replaced it with an Autolite plug since the other would have to be ordered. Runs like a charm now.
You were telling me to check that so long ago too. I still get bfire on deceleration though. Not nearly as much however.
Thanks a ton guys!
