I just can't figure this out... how do I figure out which oil I need? My bike says "Lubricant: SAE15W40" on the side, but I keep coming up with Diesel oil when I look it up online?! There's so many... I don't know what's what.
Also big question: does it need to be synthetic? The shop I bought my bike from always puts in synthetic...that's really all I know.
What's the trick to this, so I can just walk in any store and know what I need?

Personal preference. Just use a name brand. I haven't had any problems running regular 10w40 dino oil in mine and a lot of folks go with 10w30 for the winter. What's the best oil? Ask a hundred different folks, get a hundred different answers.

I must say that if they put Synthetic in it, then you must keep putting Synthetic in it. That's the oil that once you put that in there, you have to keep using synthetic. I use Mobile 1 10W40 Synthetic oil.

Thank you, I just looked that up on walmart.com, found it... you're right, it's a good price. So then, it doesn't matter that it says diesel?

Go to the retailer trashtruck suggested, and look around. For $12.50 you can get this I use this in my scoot.....also in my other bikes......and with one BMW valve cover, costing more than my entire scooter drivetrain, you can imagine what their engines are worth. Delvac is an outstanding engine oil.

Okay thank you... and these oils saying "for Diesel" is fine for scooters? Everything's pointing to yes but I wanna make sure.
I just learned this, for any newbies like me: I was told I can take my old oil to a local recycling center or a place like Advance Auto Parts and they'll take it. Just put it in a clean water or milk jug, or any container that closes without leaking.

I use an inexpensive 10-40 as well. I think what's more important is that it's changed often. Use a less expensive oil and change it more, your engine will last longer.

I've been using dollar store oil for almost three years now on all my scooters. I change every 500 miles in cooler months, and every 300 miles in hot months. No issues to date, and even with my frequent changes, I still have spent less than brand name or synth oil would cost!

Hi, I finally changed my oil for the first time (only took 12,000 miles...), I'm happy I understand it and can do it myself now. However, I don't understand the dipstick, where I'm supposed to fill it. Currently I've got it to the end of the X's. I'm measuring without screwing it in. Here's a picture with it wiped off: Depending which tire I lean the bike on, it goes under the last X or over the last X. I figure if I balance the bike in the middle and check it, that's where it should be...? So balanced in the middle it's on the last X.

The area you point to is ideal. Do not overfill. Overfilling causes oil to foam up which means it will not lubricate your engine. Never check your oil right after turning off the engine. Wait at least 5 minutes for the oil to settle before checking it. Also, when you change your oil, do so right after a scooter ride. Hot oil drains more completely than cold oil. Wear yellow dishwashing gloves to prevent skin burns. Change your gear oil too. This is how I change my gear oil. Go for a ride. Drain the gear oil. Get a kitchen measuring cup. Fill it with the right amount of gear oil. Use a syringe to transfer gear oil from the measuring cup to the gearbox.

Ohh cool, I'll go get a syringe then! Awesome tip, thank you. It's definitely time for gear oil... I was so excited I did my motor oil that I forgot about gear oil still needs done, so thank you for reminding me! I only recently found out that existed and needs changed.. you don't wanna know how long it's been. I'm gonna check tomorrow if there's any label near the gear oil bolt, because if not, I have no idea which numbers I'm supposed to get... Here's something else on the side of my bike... any ideas?
