Doing belated PDI on well-used 2008 Roketa MC-54-250B that I bought used. Pics of current filters at this link: s1035.photobucket.com/albums/a438/technoglide/Roketa%20MC-54-250B/CVT%20transmission/used%20Air%20and%20trans%20filters/Are these dirty enough to change? I talked to a shop that said to leave the cvt cover filter off, it restricts air flow, heat is hard on belt. I tore-up my cvt cover gasket during removal. Asked about that. Guy said it wasn't necessary, air flows through already, why need an airtight seal? Said it's hard to get air box filter, is mine really dirty. I would like opinions on these proposals. if you think they are needed, please supply a source that you have bought them from. Thanks, as always. You guys rock my scooting world!

Running without your CVT cover filter isn't a problem if you don't live in a dust area or drive on dirt roads. If you do you can make a filter using shipping foam cut to 1/4" thick and cut to fit between the two plastic pieces. The air filter is another story, you should probably replace that one since dirt and dust going into engine isn't a good thing. There are several sites that sell air filters, finding one that will fit your scooter is another story.

I replaced my CVT filter with window screen just to keep out big stuff. I haven't had a gasket on my CVT cover in more than a year. And I agree with Gmoney, you need to replace that air filter.

Both of my scooters are without cover gaskets, they do have filters, keeping out dust and dirt will give you longer life for the belt and pulleys.

I use a bead of red silicone instead of a gasket. The gaskets fit terribly in most CVT units and often interfere with the belts...
Foam air box filters do much better with a coat of sticky foam filter oil...

Hmm. Thanks to all for the wisdom. I've ordered some foam material to cut a new air filter. I've never seen red silicone. where do you get it/formal name? Should I scrape the old partly peeled and torn gasket off prior to reinstalling the CVT cover? I've seen aluminum parts where it's better to leave old gasket, rather than scratching the joining surfaces. I like the window screen idea for the CVT filter. There's alot of black rubbery buildup from worn belts on the inside of the CVT cover. Do I need to clean it? If so, what solvent should I use? Thanks again, -tglide

Would it be wise to eliminate the cvt cover (rubber) gasket as without it water will go in and over time be detrimental to belt and pulleys.

My cvt cover gasket wasn't rubber, it was more like cheap cardboard. When I removed the cover it just came apart in pieces. I removed it all and put the cover on without any gasket. Never needed one on my GY6 so no need for one on my 54B.

My CVT gasket is rubber also. I put a few dabs of silicon around the edge of the gasket to hold it in place during removal and installation of the cover. Shouldn't have to ever replace this gasket as it's pretty durable. Another reason to keep the rubber gasket on would be to help reduce noise since the rubber seal helps isolate the large CVT cover from the vibrations of the engine.
