Anyone using one? If so what brand/material? I see 2 different ones on MonsterGY6 that interest me, one is CF and the other chrome. I'm not a chrome fan but the chrome model looks like a more open design than the CF. Any experience or suggestions welcome. I used to build air-cooled VW's back in the day so I know a better fan can make a bit of a difference.

I too was thinking of a Carbon Fiber Looking fan with matching cover and air scoop. I can do without the chrome look as well 13lky2 but to each his own. Is there really a benefit or do the fans just look cool? Pun intended

I have been going through the oil cooler faqs. I had an external oil cooler on my 71' Super Beetle that we had mounted outside the decklid in a homemade turbo tail. I was looking at throwing something together for the scoot, but then I realized without it here, it's hard to really figure out exactly what I need when I can't take measurements.

Good to know that the scoops don't help! I had my eye on one.

Not always. It depends on how the air moves. You can in fact create areas of vacuum around the engine where there is NO cooling air flow at all.

The best solution is 'push - pull' . In this situation you have one fan pushing in and another fan sucking the heat from the engine on the other side. Scoops are generally pointless. It is much better to change the grid on the fan cover...There is a French scooter guy that has done a ton of research on this... with charts etc...

The best solution is to add a 12 volt, 6" pancake fan on the left side of the plastic shroud with a thermostatic switch. That way the fan only runs when only is needed.

Ok, we now need another fan in front of the fan on the stator to push the air into the pulling fan on the stator.
We are dealing with what we have and you think air passing by something is going to bring in more air than if pointing something into the air stream. Maybe the airplane engines should have the fans on the side to prevent the birds from going into it and damaging them.

I agree that in theory a scoop should help but without wind tunnel testing or a very accurate pressure gauge its hard to tell. Depending on the air flow around the scoot it may be better to turn the scoop backwards. Remember cowl induction? Its not intuitive but because of the way the air flowed around the car cowl induction worked better then a forward facing scoop.
If you could put a pressure gauge on the scoop and it measured more then 1 atmosphere then it would help. Its can be amazing how little extra pressure it take to increase air flow. My uncle used to put automotive smog pumps on air compressors to increase the pumping volume. Even though they don't pump much pressure, that little bit of forced induction would drastically improve the efficiency of the compressor.

Well I think bringing in cooler air is better than hot hair that is around the fan. So a scoop sticking out to get the cooler air as your moving is better than the already hot air from the engine and pipe. Cannot not hurt, such as on cars they will extend the tubing and mount a Free Flow Filter to feed the intake to the front then on some they even have a Tube going down to grab the air by the front lower facia.

I agree with the both of you that is why my 90 degree elbow is a 5" diameter one AND I cut our the grill!!

most of those fan scoops dont extend enough to really get at any air. maybe a whole 90 degree bend would grab air better, but would put more drag on the fan at idle.

also beware, cutting the middle of the vent out opens up space for rocks to enter your fan housing and possibly getting stuck, damaging the fan or your stator. cut with caution. i would at least run some sort of screen

alley, also you would only pull hot exhaust air when sitting still as well. moving at all would eliminate that.

jhbiez- cowl induction works bc of the air hitting the windshield. turning the scoop around on your fan shroud would actually help PULL air AWAY from the fan causing more issues.

So what you guys believe is the way it is pulls cooler air than if you had a scoop on it that reaches out away from heat from the engine and header pipe

So here is my plan. Take the stock plastic shroud, remove the grill. Take some chicken wire type fencing stuff I use for auto grills and make a screen for the shroud. If it works out well, then I will probably buy the CF shroud from GY6 and mod it too.

Fairly easy to understand FOR YOU MAYBE(HEHE), you probably speak the language
So looks like cut open the shroud and cut the edgeing on the fan,
or find a find with hardly no edge on the blades is that right.

Ya, you cut the shroud right back removing the 'step' where the screen part is and then use a fan with the edge of the blades exposed...

This gives the best cooling, better than the 'high performance' fans

So for those that would like to aid the cooling but not be without the grille, would it be of benefit to cut it off and then fit one of these?
