After changing almost all of my lights to LEDs, I burned up my battery with too much voltage from the charging system. I've changed some lights back (headlights are 50/50 Xenons and the stop/tail lights are Sylvania Silverstars now), to try to hit a happy medium. My new battery measures about 12.75 - 13 across the terminals at idle.
What should the battery voltage measure at higher RPMs like 1k, 2k, 3k, 4k etc? I don't want to blow another battery.

It seems as if your R/R is not working properly. I just installed a new 6 wire R/R on my 54B scoot and it reads 13.4 going down the road at 5000 rpm. It holds that even at idle. I have HID's installed also. LED's on the rear...stop and turn. Life is Good....

Thanks! I was sort of suspecting that. If you bought your new R/R online, could you post a link?

A new battery should read around 13 (when scoots not running) and should read 13 to 14 rev up. like bhinch said.

R/R is definitely toast, and it answers another question I had. When the weather got warm enough to ride in February, after I would get home, there would be a bitter smell that I couldn't identify. There also seemed to be a couple of drops of a strange substance on top of the muffler that was the origin of the smell. Turns out that the R/R's resin (or whatever that stuff is on the back) had been heating up enough to melt and drip a few drops on to the muffler.

Check those connections above your R/R. I had classic signs of a bad R/R, turn out to be a melted 3 way plug coming from my startor, because it came loose and wasn't making good connection. Attachments:

My bike is 3 months old and voltage gauge reads 9 tops and drops to 6 or 7 at idle. Scoot runs and starts fine. Is there a problem comming? I've never seen a 12 volt reading. I have a GY6 150cc 157QMJ engine with 1200km. Reverse trike

You have a 12 volt battery and that's the voltage you will see if you take a good digital volt meter and measure directly on the battery. You should see at least 12.7 volts with the engine off and over 13 volts with the engine running.
It sounds like you have a meter installed on the scoot and it could be connected incorrectly or it is defective. If you don't want to mess with the meter, then compare the 9 volt reading to an actual reading on the battery and you can interpolate from there. Most scoots have inaccurate speedometers and we have to interpolate the readings after using a gps as a reference. So you could just do the same with your voltmeter, but I would be more comfortable with a more accurate reading.

I realy don't know but....what is a R/R ? the R/R is the REGULATOR RECTIFIER it charges your battery and also feeds some of your electricals. Alleyoop

Then start it and check again(WITHOUT THE HEADLIGHTS ON ) and see what it reads. It should read higher. If it does and you VOLT METER in the instrument panel does not read as high check the wiring to it as well as the wiring on the battery. Alleyoop
