Ok here we go again. First of all thank you guys for always helping and sorry for going MIA so much. My attention span sucks and when I don't want to deal with something I usually abandon the project for far too long. You guys are great and so is this site! I miss riding my scooter and am getting tired of the 20 block bike ride to and from work. Also lately I've been getting chased by loose dogs on my bike so its time to get the scoot going again So I let my cheap but new 50cc chinese scooter sit far too long after not wanting to deal with some acceleration problems and the gas tank totally rusted out and gummed up the fuel lines, carb etc. Tried to clean carb jets, readjust valves and carb but i didnt work so I let it sit again, project abandoned and covered for a bit. I ordered a new float fuel sensor, gas tank, fuel lines, filter, manual fuel switch (in line) and carb. Im now working on replacing it all little by little, in my living room while watching tv and in the comfort of my AC I have the scooter cleaned up, faring off, gas tank removed and was just comparing the old one to the new gas tank and have a question. Video here:

That looks like a piece of retaining clip I have on mine that doesnt do anything. If its a vent then your cap should be enough ventelation.

Thanks, that's one of my chihuahua mix rescues, just got another one a 3 months ago. Ya I capped off the hole running to the air intake / vac when I switched from petcock to manual fuel on/off switch. So is this what you mean about the rest? :

I dont think it matters since either way there is flow. Since its not a liquid that needs to be filtered and flowing at the correct rate it shouldnt matter. Theres already so many restrictions in those setups. If we are wrong you'll notice some issues as it warms up and pressures rise. An easy fix especially if your gas cap is under the seat is a small relief hole you can drill into the top of the cap near the center bar. That will relieve the pressure as well.

Good to know. My gas cap is plastic/metal and locking. Needed in my neighborhood) wonder if I should drill a hole in the gas tank itself before I put it in and be sure to get any metal shards out. I have vinyl cling material in a sheet that peels on and off to cover the hole if need be. I use it to cover my whole gas cap. FL rain can be crazy.gas cap isn't under seat, it's behind it at the very back/top of my scooter
I wonder if I can forgo drilling a hole and just open and close the gas cap often (end of each ride) to let some air / out. I never ride longer than about 15 to 20 minutes

I believe those are already vented then so i would just ride and see how it goes.

Good idea. If I were to drill a hole id want to before installing the new gas tank to get the metal shards out, but I'll see how it goes like you said and if it gives Me crap I'll try taking the gas cap off to let done air in/out and go from there. If that doesn't work I can try a non locking cap with a hole. Thanks

The basic metal cap that came with the scooter should be fine, if it is like the one in the picture above, unless it is rusted shut... possible.
When you put your new tank on, I would go ahead and replace all the fuel lines, its cheap to do. The manual shut off is a great idea too, the stock petcocks WERE a great idea, but after about 2 years, the diaphragm rots.

thanks mikey. it came with a lock cap, not a basic metal one. it had some rust on it but i got it all off with CLR. Oh I'm def replacing all the fuel lines, fuel filter and even the carb! (starting over fresh) i had two scooters and the petcocks wanted to all of a sudden not do their job and not deliver gas, or deliver it sporadically even after replacing them so I gave up on them for my particular kind of scooters. manual shut off is the way i roll now

Haha, I have taken my carb's off SO MANY TIMES, I can detach the throttle cable with one hand, after the bolts are loose! Sucks with only 2 hands! I like it when I have a friend to help :/ haha I'm sure you will do fine. It is so awesome to know, that they're REALLY are good girl mechanics!!! I wish I could meet a girl that knew her way around tools!!!
