As an Army Brat I grew up in Germany and Japan. Everywhere you looked folks were riding scooters. You name the brand, and they were driving them. Cars were not that common after WWII. Perhaps three families out of 1,000 owned cars. Scooters and bicycles were the norm. When Dad retired we moved back to the USA. Scooters were only at collages and collage towns. I never understood why they did not catch on more than they did.

I never read any instructions or comments on the '78 Honda NC50 Express clutch itself. Being in an oil bath, how does on tell when it is only slipping in a normal fashion compared to one that is failing other than the bike won't move?

I placed my timing light on my bike only to find the timing is retarded. I adjusted the "base" screw and found all I can adjust is the point gap. I cannot advance nor retard the timing. The gap is set to .014. Closing or opening the gap did not increase/decrease the timing. I removed the flywheel and found the Point Cam Lubricating Pad was not touching the cam surface. The surface is only slightly discolored and not worn. I adjusted the pad and lubed it up. The cam follower for the points has some wear on it from running dry. Are the points causing the timing not to come into play due to this wear on the follower? My timing light shows the timing is retarded and will not advance to the timing mark towards TDC "F" line. Someone in the past looks to have placed marks on the flywheel for some reason. Is the timing and point gap adjusted by the "base" screw alone or am I missing a step somewhere? You can see the mark is retarded and over the F,not on the line.

I got the bike together now. I did not repaint the whole bike, not sure if I will. It has : A replaced headlight bucket and bezel. replaced front forks-rebuilt springs and painted new tires new tubes New seat new seat securing wing bolt LED bulbs in high beam indicator,Speedo and tail light New replaceable head light New control cables for brakes, choke and throttle replaced right hand control castings new battery foam filled battery/ignition coil/regulator compartment new spark plug pickled gas/oil tank in line gas filter Carb disassembled and ultra sound cleaned and pickled. new fuel/oil lines and clamps new air cleaner, high flow type ( original completely rotted away ) new foot starter return spring New transmission oil restored original 1978 license plate ( no longer needed in my state) I cleaned the engine and frame of 40 years of desert bugs and crud. The bike sat under a pine tree for the last 25 years. No rust just pine sap and lots of dry rot. I have a replacement set of rear view mirrors coming. The old bike runs well now. With me on it it will do 25 mph on the flats. ( I live at 7,000 feet) The oil injection is working very well and does not bleed into the crankcase when off/parked Wiring removed and all connectors cleaned. Brake switches rewired/soldered.

I bought a new complete headlight assembly. The one on my bike was so brittle it had to be constantly repaired. The "bent handle bars" turned out not to be. The forks were bent. I got a replacement one now. Bike should be ready to roll for the rest of the summer soon.

I just got a used headlight bezel and bucket to replace my dry rot one. I have two questions on assembling the two as mine was missing parts when I got it. First, there is a 2ND spring included in the "new" bucket that I have no idea as to where it goes? 2ND: there are no provisions to secure the speedometer in the bucket. The metal and rubber gaskets are there but any locking device is long gone. How can I secure the speedo if parts are not available anymore?

My last hurtle has been the headlight bucket and bezel. The problem is it is dried out and brittle. So much so that you cannot put the bezel in the bucket with out chips and cracks forming. After two tubes of JB weld it was getting the the point of having to cover the two parts in fiberglass to make it usable. I found a better condition complete head light assembly from a "wet" state and I'm hoping it will not be so brittle.

The new headlight showed up. Well made. Incandescent bulb is bright and easy to replace if burned out.
