>>I want it as lean as possible.
These scooter need to run on the rich side...run it lean and you will find a hole in your piston sure as sh!t
Yup you need a muffler because you need some back pressure.

Jets are too small and you probably don't have the cam chain set at TDC... sounds to me like you are link or two retarded on the cam chain. How did you set TOP DEAD CENTER? If you used the flywheel it is off... I guarantee it...

Car batteries are fine to jump a scooter I use one all the time... the electrical components only take what they need. As Rich pointed out.. things start to pop when the car is running...
Once the scooter engine is running the battery is no longer needed and can be disconnected...
Most scooters run from the stator on AC volts... the DC circuit is separate, for the battery charge and lights on some brands
You could have a DC voltage CDI that is charged off the battery side... but I doubt the car battery would effect that. Much more likely a short in the scooter battery...

>>But seriously you know more stuff than most of those SO CALLED MECHANICS Ya, I wonder what training these scooter monkeys have...perhaps the bosses like them stupid so they throw $80 of parts at a scooter to 'fix' the problem rather than doing any diagnosis which most are incapable of anyways... But there are some GREAT scooter mechanics out there... just a few... and if they give a sh!t they help out on the scooter forums

You have the side stand in the up position and are holding the left brake handle?

On the starting.. I vaguely recall that those scooters had problems with the enrichers (choke)...you may want to research that...

I agree with Rich...it is important for the variator nut especially... people use an impact wrench and over tighten the variator nut which drives the kickstarter gear up the tapered shaft to a point where it can be nearly impossible to remove, except by cutting it with a grinder... no fun...

Have you got an exhaust system on the scooter now?
Backfiring is air getting into the exhaust header, or you are running lean or the ACV is not function as Big B mentioned.

Good call on the filter Roy...it is backwards and needs to be zip tied! straightbangin you need to buy some 5 or 6 inch nylon zip ties at the Dollar store. Remove all those cheap metal spring clips holding your hoses and replace them with zip ties.. Pull them really tight with a pair of pliers...the manual shut off looks good. If you have a spare vacuum line now that used to go to the petcock you need to plug it... A wooden golf tee works well..and zip tie it too... Do every hose on the scooter and you will never have a fuel or vacuum leak...(unless the hose splits) Ever need to remove a hose, just cut the zip tie with a pair of nail clippers...I always carry a pair on my scoot

Check the two wires on the ignition coil. Check the big black wire going from the ignition coil to the plug boot. Check that the plug boot grips the spark plug firmly...
It sounds to me like it could be an intermittent electrical connection somewhere

I agree John... check your vacuum hoses and the connection to the intake elbow...there must be a good amount of vacuum on that hose... when you run the starter you should be able to feel the suction...
