I like the idea of a national sales tax instead of income tax. Every dollar spent in this country would be taxed weather it was legally earned or not. Any money you save would not be taxed until you spend it. I read that 2 to 3 cents on a dollar would bring in more money then the income tax. It would also greatly reduce fraud. While I agree with you that if we were making up a tax system from scratch that a national sales tax would be the fairest way of collecting taxes. The problem I see with changing to a "fair tax" (yes I've read Neal Bortz's book) is that people who have scrimped and saved their whole lives have already paid taxes on the money they have saved. Yes, I know that 401K plans and pensions come out pre tax, but other money you have saved up has been taxed.... HEAVILY. Changing to a consumption tax would in effect tax you again on the same money you have already paid taxes on when you earned it. Double (or even triple) taxation is far from "fair." I favor a flat tax on individual tax payers only. No deductions of any kind. Corporations would be exempt. Let me explain why "big corporations" shouldn't have to pay taxes. They currently don't pay their own taxes. YOU DO! You may not realize it, but a portion of the price of every good or service you purchase is going to pay the corporation's taxes. If a company makes and sells widgets that cost $1 to manufacture and ship to the store, they might sell it for $1.30 to gain a 30% profit. But they have to pay taxes on that income of 36% so they need to sell the widget for $1.41 to cover their profit and the taxes (36% of 30¢=10.8¢) A flat tax on every individual would make it so that the CEO's would pay more of that out of their own pockets and not pass the costs on to customers who buy their products. Our tax system is so convoluted and cumbersome that NO ONE knows how it works. I saw a TV News show a few years back where they took a guys tax information to several different accountants just to see if any of them would be similar and guess what? ALL of the entries were different. This should not be the case. How did Ray Stephens put it? "If 10% is good enough for Jesus, it ought to be good enough for Uncle Sam.

Finally got a day that was above 40° here in MO and when my little woman got home I had the Silverwing out and she was as ready for a ride as I was so off we went. When we left it was 64° and we rode for 45 mins to arrive home with a temperature of 51°. Saw 12 deer along the way.
Was so ready for a ride. Hopefully this will be a fun filled year for riding. I'm planning a ride to the Superman museum in Metropolis, ILL in like May. Hope all is well with you all.
Take care.

I was thinking this would be a great time to invest a little money in a scooter or motorcycle company, but which publicly held company do you think would be in a good position to capitalize on such a market?

No, I'm not talking about the weather. I got my 2 scooters out of the garage today and started them up.
My Silverwing started right up.
My Roketa didn't do as well. Mainly though because it hasn't been run since about November. It was about out of gas and I suppose what gas there was in it had gone bad. I walked up to the gas station in the snow (about 3 blocks) and got $2 worth of premium gas and put in it and it fired right up. (That's about a half gallon!) Added some Sta-Bil to it and let that get all up in the engine too.
I'm gonna get the Roketa serviced up and put it on the market come about March. I figure with gas prices inching upwards I wont have a lot of trouble getting rid of it.
I tried riding my Silverwing up the driveway just a few feet and it slipped in the snow and I said the hell with that! I didn't fall over but felt like I was gonna real soon so I backed it up and put it away.
We're supposed to get 3-5" more snow tomorrow. I wish all this evil white stuff would go away so I could start riding again!

Earthman: I've used that signature for a long time. I use it on all the forums I frequent. You're the first one to comment on it. Previously, I used "Be thankful you don't get all the government you pay for." Which I think is equally as thought provoking.

Thanks for the heads up! I removed my information. I know it's not totally gone, but every little bit helps!

We got them installed and probably looked weird sitting at our computers with out helmets on talking to one another. Had a little trouble with the radios in them but finally got that kink worked out. One thing I didn't like was that the intercom part of it seems to be much quieter than the radio so that if you're listening to the radio at acceptable levels you wont be able to hear the other person talking very well, or if you can talk at acceptable levels, the radio will be blasting in your ear when you go back. The cell phone interface was really cool. I've never had any blue tooth devices before.
Will report back after we've road tested them, which may be a couple months according to the weather man.

For Christmas I got the Scala Rider G4 Powerset helmet intercom system and today I got them installed on our helmets. I still have the other pieces charging so I don't know how they work yet, but we'll be doing that this afternoon.
Does anyone have any experience with these?

I've tried putting my scooter in the back of a truck several times by riding it and I always chicken out at or near the top of the ramp. I've discovered that having a second ramp there and guiding the scooter up while walking on the second ramp is much better and you keep better control.
Apparently this guy is just an idiot.

One thing that is overlooked and not mentioned is that there are MILLIONS of cars compared to the number of two wheelers so maybe that 4k+ number of deaths of two wheelers is actually more percentage wise. Food for thought. Alleyoop While that may be true, one would still tend to believe that motorcycles are just as dangerous as Russian Roulette, which is COMPLETELY untrue. Also I found it interesting that it is in fact more dangerous to walk than to ride a motorcycle... regardless of percentages, more people died walking.

My girlfriend has a friend out in california who is related to someone who died in that wreck.
The account I have heard was that the Honda driver was upset with the motorcycles going the speed limit and went to pass them as a group (there were 10) and was traveling at or around 100mph in the wrong lane when the driver who was apparently arrested in this story came into the picture. He apparently lost control of his vehicle and hit the motorcycles. The Honda driver NEVER STOPPED and no one got the license number.
Sad sad day indeed.

I often get asked about how I can ride one of those "death traps" or some other such nonsensical question concerning my scooter. I thought it would be interesting to look at actual statistics about car accidents verses motorcycle accidents and compare. A cursory search of the internet led me to 2 sites that had data for the same year for each. 2005 is the year I chose to compare because it is the nearest year I could find statistics on both types of vehicles. I looked both at www.car-accidents.com/pages/stats.html and at www.edgarsnyder.com/motorcycle-accident/statistics.html" Car Crash Stats: There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. The financial cost of these crashes is more than 230 Billion dollars. 2.9 million people were injured and 42,636 people killed. About 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States -- one death every 13 minutes." " In 2005, 4,553 people died in motorcycle crashes, an increase of 13% from 4,028 in 2004. " 42,636 people died in cars and 4553 on motorcycles. Huh. Listen to this: More people died AS PEDESTRIANS in 2005 than as motorcyclists! 4881 people died in auto accidents as a pedestrian. ( www.car-accidents.com/pages/fatal-accident-statistics.html ) I got one question to ask the people driving their cage: How can you stand to ride in that death trap? Interesting side note discussion that I discovered in the motorcycle accident statistics: " 1,546 lives were saved by helmets in 2005. If all states required helmets, an additional 728 more lives would have been saved. " That's a total of 2274 that were saved by helmets or could have been saved. 4553 people died. What about the other 2279? could they not have been saved by helmets? I get preached to about helmets or not all the time but geez louise. Only Half of the fatalities could be stopped by helmets? Or maybe I'm looking at this all wrong. 4553-728=3725. Perhaps that's the number of people who had motorcycle accidents who WOULD HAVE DIED ANYWAY even though they were wearing a helmet. Just food for thought
