If it's a new bore kit, shouldn't need honing... You only need to hone used cylinders to get rid of the glazing & for seating new rings in use bore...

Some GY6 rings don't have any bevel at all... Some GY6 rings have the bevel on the bottom edge of the rings, & some Herve a bevel on both top & bottom... Some GY6 rings have no marks indicating top or 1st or 2nd ring... If there's no indicators I wouldn't worry about up or down, if one ring is chrome or silver or color I'd use it as 1st ring... & of coarse set gap acordingly...

Al I'm going to attempt to enter it in the local Car/ Motorcycle Show again this year... As you know last year it blew apart just before the show, so thought if it stays together I'll enter it this year...

Hay Al!! The chain guard was for you my friend, being you kept commenting about my rusty drive chain... Now you can't see it, HA!! HA!! Which bring me to this, I seen a chain lube at my local motorcycle dealer/ shop... This chain lube is for O-ring chain & it cleans chain & lubricates both at the same time... Suppose to make chain clean bright metal... Don't know if it's any good or not, & it's like $17. a can, pretty pricey...
Wolfhound Want to see you ride that trike...

Hello Doc's This is my cargo carrier project that's been on the back burner for quite a long time now... I finally got around to executing the project... It weighs around 20 lb... It's rated for 150 lb load capacity but I figure it should be good for 200 lb... Which should be plenty, besides that's really a lot of weight for any motorcycle especially when the weight is behind the rear axle... I haven't had a chance to road test it yet, so I don't know how it'll handle w/ any kind of weight on it... Main purpose is for shopping, light hauls... This project isn't quite completed yet, & I'm open to ideas & or suggestions you might want to contribute.... David Sr.

A Dawg's Mike I haven't found a bigger windshield will bolt right on... Don't know that windshield Al has could be modded to work on the -11 model or not... I'm just a little jealous of Al & his windshield...
Al It's running great, drive train solid... Got the gas mileage to 60 + mpg...
A couple of weeks ago ran in to a road block w/ old inspection sticker, inspection ran out 9/2010, Trooper walked down my left looking at trike & asked if it was registered, continued around the back, as I said Yes it's registered, he walked up my right side & said "have a good day", then I hammered it... I don't think he even looked for the inspection sticker... A couple of days ago took it to get it inspected, must've picked up a nail, had to plug a hole in one of the Load Star tires on the rear...

mctojs Well I guess the question is, how many miles did you have on it before it started going through a lot of oil??? If it was 4,000 or 5,000 miles, then I'd say stick w/ the setup you have now, if it's running good w/ the setup you have on it now as it should be tuned for that setup... Don't forget when installing new rings the cylinder will have to be deglazed (honed)...

I knew Gates was Chinese... But I do want to investigate any quality differences...
Here's another Kevlar story to put under your cap... My experience w/ Kevlar belts: I broke a Kevlar drive belt on a snowmobile WOT, about 80 - 85 mph, there was so much tension on the belt that when the belt broke it bent the crank shaft... Kind of like the belt was to short, but didn't seem to be the case & never found any problems to cause this, accept the fact that at the time we changed out a non Kevlar belt for a Kevlar belt... Because of that, the use of Kevlar belts is something to think about...

mctojs Well, good question... As to the exact fix, need to trouble shoot the problem to figure out if it's a back pressure problem or not, but not knowing for sure if the rings were installed properly, makes this a tough thing to do in my opinion... If it were me, I'd probably assume the rings were not installed properly or weren't properly broke-in properly (this assumption is based on the fact that I have no way to know if the rings were installed properly, I don't know the specs of your exhaust & intake + I'm not a performance expert ether)... There's a couple of ways to go about this...
You could go w/ the possibility that it's a back pressure problem... In this case, I'd make sure the rings are installed properly then add more restriction to the exhaust flow to create more back pressure (for trouble shooting purposes I'd restrict the exhaust flow at least 30 - 50%, so the results are immediate), & re tune... The ride 50 miles or so to see what your oil usage is... If oil consumption improves, adjust exhaust flow accordingly... This trouble shooting option would be the least expensive & would ether confirm or illuminate back pressure from the equassion...
OR
You could go back to square 1 & leave exhaust alone (this option is based on the idea that problems were possibly break-in related (but more expensive)... Weather you replace just the rings, or replace the whole bore kit... If I was to go this route I'd prefer to just replace rings as long as the bore & piston were in good condition... Here's the problem w/ this plan, I haven't been able to find just 58.5mm rings, I have found 59mm rings... Because of this problem I changed my engine bores to 59mm... Or replace w/ new bore kit all together (this would be my absolute last option)... Then do a proper break-in... If your problem is break-in related, your oil consumption will come back to normal w/ this option, & will show during the first few miles of the break-in period... As for break-in & chrome bores I don't know what the procedures are, I've never messed w/ chrome bores... But in my opinion a chrome bore needs a break-in period just like any other bores...
In the beginning of my scooter experience I broke-in 2 scoots w/ the "Drive It Like You Stole It" Procedure, & w/ in a couple of hundred miles both scoots were blowing oil (10 - 20 + onces of oil / 50 miles, & around 700 miles they were knocking)... I did a proper break-in on my trike & have never had a problem w/ oil consumption, I did a proper break-in after rebuilding the top end of the 1 scoot & never had a problem w/ oil consumsion... Hope this helps... The other Dawg's might have other thoughts though...
