I had a couple errands to run and its a beautiful day so I rode. On the way up to the college, I hit the red light and stopped within smelling distance of a 2 day old dead skunk. Coming back from the tax collector's, I got stuck a stoplight right beside a garbage truck - GAG!

I pass dead animals on the road to and from town all the time, Skunks, Armadillos, Deer, Racoons, Rabbits, Snakes with the occasional Cat or Dog, in the 120+ degree in the sun Texas Heat they get ripe real quick, and I have to dodge them many times on my way to work early in the mornings at 5:10 - 5:30AM, I sure am in no hurry to hit one of them raskels dead or alive.... that may end up putting me on the road right beside them, not fun at all...!

when i did the ride to San Diego,we came across 3 dead,crushed skunks in 3 different places. i can smell it in few meters.,, can't they run fast? or blind? why do they always get ran over by vehicles?

i think skunks never gives out bad smell unless agitated or threatened.

Maybe they're suicidal? Beats me - we have at least 3 running around the back yards. They don't normally move all that fast but they can run. I don't think their eyesight is very good.

You're right - they only spray when frightened or in the case of roadkills, when their scent glands are crushed. The neighbor shot at one with a BB gun the other night and must of hit it. The whole neighborhood stunk all night. We saw one last night and he said he wasn't going to shoot at it. I think his wife laid down the law.

so is it safe so say that skunks are public nuisance? why don't the government eradicate every skunk in town, erradicate is not the right word sorry,i mean at least isolate them from human race, they can prolly bring them to the forest far far away from civilization. when i was growing,i see skunks only in cartoons and comics,didn't know that it's for real, same as tasmanian devil.
and i was made to believe that dracula came from transylvania and tasmania(is transilvania and tasmania a country? or just a product of imagination? i need some enlightenment here.

If you're asking seriously... both are real places. Tasmania is an island nation off the southern coast of Australia and if my memories serves me correctly (and without resorting to Google), Transylvania is a region of Romania in Eastern Europe.

there is a recipie on the net for deskunking. what it amounts to is dawn dish detergebt, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. the medical stuff not the hair dresser stuff. when it is mixed it foams and slosh it all over the dogs. leave it sit on them for a bit and hose them down. they will smell like a dog again. i have used it and it works. john

if i were you i'd rather shave the dogs fur,you don't know what bacteria that skunk brings to your dog , it won't take much time for the dog hair to grow back anyways.

if you trim the Yorkies put them in a terrier trim. They look great in that trim. Used to have
a pet Yorkie and we always kept him in that trim. Neat, easy to care for.
Luke, I doubt that the skunk is carrying any bacteria that the dogs have not been exposed to.
Now Rabies is a different story but I am sure that JR's dogs are current on their shots.

trap them, you know these self activated screen traps,just put food in it,, big enough to fit the skunk and small enough to prevent yorkies from entering.,..what do skunks eat??fish? meat? or veggies? and are they prolific? when i went to my sister in NY, i managed to trap a squirrel using a bird cage, rubberbands ,tree branches and bread... i outwit them.,at least i proved that my brain is bigger than theirs.lol
neighbors were amazed that an Arizona guys was able to catch new yorker squirrel. ;D

Now go outside tomorrow and look around the yard and look closely to the ground and see if there are little dug up holes about 1-2 inches deep. The little critters that you are talking about live on grubs and worms that are in the grass roots. If you get rid of them, you'll get rid of the skunks.
The story I remember is, our neighbor across the street was named Sam. They also named a cat after him, Little Sam. Now big Sam worked the evening shift and returned home around 11:30 in the evening and every evening big Sam would kick little Sam out from the door way to get into the house. Yep, you guessed it. Little Sam turned into, " Sammy Stinker, " and Big Sam kicked Sammy Stinker in the butt. Not only did Sammy stinker let go in the doorway but he turned and went into the house. Hot Damn!
Big Sam had a pretty large family, 3 girls and 2 boys. They all woke up to the stink and the girls screaming and Big Sam chasing Sammy Stinker around the house. The home had a staircase to the second floor and all the kids were watching Big Sam chasing Sammy stinker around the living room with the broom.
The oldest boy, ducky, said to his dad, Wait, I've got an idea. He went to the kitchen and dumped the garbage out of the can and went into the living room and put it over Sammy Stinker. He then went to the garage and got a shovel and slid it under the waste can and took off out the door with Sammy Stinker. ducky freed the skunk without getting sprayed. ( They think he had already used everything he had and couldn't spray anymore.)

CC, With the heat in the high 90's, you can really tell when there is something dead in the area. I have been seeing more bloated raccoons going back and forth to work than anything else.
I'm going to be headed out your way at the end of the month to see my Mother and I hope that there aren't too many dead deer on the Pa. Turnpike. ? Why did they stop picking up the dead animals off the highways?

I'll check with the local trapper and see what he uses to get rid of the great smell that a skunk releases. He would know. He sells the scent glands...... WOW!

Wow - sorry I opened that subject up!

PA roadkills - the game wardens used to pick them up but then the state started contracting the work out. A few years ago, PennDot evidently paved over a dead deer. After a public stink, (pun intended) their spokesperson said it was "not official PennDot policy to pave over dead animals".

That happened down ZugZug's way.

Anyone who lives in the country should know if you have any holes that go under your house, they should be blocked off. Now skunks are nocturnal, just wait until an hour or 2 after dark then block off the entrance. Problem fixed.... HA HA ha ha ha ha and many more HA's HA'S
