Just a note ..... gear oil is not motoroil....I used 85W90 wt gear oil.....has been used for ages....the transmission knows the difference.....like strange noises coming from behind your seat.....will tell you..enjoy the ride.... This may be true for our particular Chinascoots, but if our riders on the other side of the pond ride Yamaha Majesty 250s, the service manual clearly states 10W30 motor oil for the transmission. Always use the manufacturer recommended fluids. In my case, I went with GL-5 75W90 gear oil. The label on the scooter said GL-3, but I can't find that specification anywhere in town.

I went with 75W90.
Somewhere I was reading about gear oils (I don't remember where) and they explained the difference between the GL standards. I think it was GL-5 that was not good for yellow metals like brass bushings. They said it was important to use the right spec. For instance, when I worked on and raced Dodge Neons, the manual transaxle oil spec'd was ATF+4

The Big Ruckus is a cool scooter. I checked them out when they were new and it fit me well. The used ones sure hold their value too.

I am liking my resurrected 54B. I've put less than 100 miles on it since I brought it back from the brink of death. It will probably be my last scooter because before I spend maxi-scooter money, I'd buy the Aprilia Mana 850GT with its flappy-paddle gearbox.

Hmm a friend with too much money maybe you should just take his basket case off his hands on the cheap. My neighbor low-balled him. The guy with the scooter felt insulted and said, he'd just have it fixed.

I just read the Yamaha YP250 service manual as it pertains to transmission oil changes. They say to use 10W30 motor oil. Does that apply to our 250s?
The label on my scooter says use GL-3 gear oil.

I'd agree that the article is an honest look at Maxi scooters. It was indeed written by purist motorcyclists and it shows that they have high standards when it comes to two wheelers. I think as scooterists, some of us get a little sensitive when it comes to comments I hear like, "get a real bike".
I'd take the TMax any day over the others in the test. When you're spending (financing) that kind of cash, what's couple of thousand more to get a well designed Japanese machine?

I hadn't noticed any slipage, but I haven't ridden it much; just some errands around town. It holds well in city traffic from light to light. It seems like a good value seeing how other clutch assemblies can cost twice as much.

That may have been a good thing that your scooter wasn't assembled. Owners of new scooters should do a PDI (pre-delivery inspection) anyway. First thing you should do is change the engine and gear oil to real oil. Many times, there is crappy shipping oil in there.

My red scooter was dropped a few times by the previous owner and is full of scratches. I am trying to find ways to hide the scratches. Something high-vis like this would have some advantages: 035-1 BMW Police Motorcycle by Sou'wester, on Flickr

I've always wanted a Piaggio MP3 from the first time I saw one.
To me, the leaning reverse trike looks easier to handle than a non-leaning, traditional trike.

I also have a hard time seeing my in dash turn indicators on my 250B. I am going to try and replace my bulbs with LEDs.

What exactly is the parallelogram front suspension? When you lean into a curve, the two front wheels lean in parallel keeping all three wheels in contact with the road.

Yes, that is just black. I am having second thoughts about a respray to silver, though.
