Sadly, you all are preaching to the choir. I would guess that at least a couple of those riders actually have slide gear at home. But it would be totally uncool to show up in it for a rally like this. And really, which would you rather have? Skin and non-broken bones, or a cool image? Besides, chicks dig scars...

No bragging at all. If the bike is running well and the grip is good and the water isn't making the belt slip, then go for it. Much better with the cars getting out of the way. Probably safer than riding around with the cars on wet pavement. These are the kind of days that you remember a long long time..

It might fit, but I don't think it has enough oomph to get the job done. It shows 80 CCA. Batteries Plus shows the mc-54-250 battery as having 205 CCA. The YT battery equivalent is the YTZ14 with 230 CCA. That is a replacement for the YTZ12s at 200 CCA. Hope it helps....

First guess is the same as most. 3 year old batteries. Most of the time, they don't gradually degrade, they just pretty much quit holding a charge under load. That's the first thing to check. And, shouldn't come as a surprise that there is help available for virtually any kind of vehicle on a forum like this. Get enough people together and there is almost always a few people with experience to share. I would guess that there are several members with welding backgrounds, others with metal fab, probably a few with upholstery, etc..

SWEET!! Now I don't have to move my mouse over to the other tabs in my browser... . Thanks for the quick links, but more importantly, for the move to better and more open info-sharing... keep up the good stuff. Nova

I don't know that you would get any more protection buying through Amazon. It ships from another company, and clicking on through to their storefront, it looks like they mostly sell scooter parts. Either they are branching out, or they may be taking orders for another outside scooter warehouse. That said, I order from Amazon all the time. Have had no problems over several years. Only complaint is that if I look something up on amazon, then I will get email ads from them for another month or two advertising the same or similar item, even if I've already bought it. Might be a setting I could change.

The main things I picked up on here, aside from the pain, is that you were riding, at night, on unfamiliar dirt roads, in low visibility..DON'T DO THAT!! Change at least a couple of those things. If your headlight is insufficient for night riding (and a lot of them are) upgrade it, or stay on roads you know. If the lighting is good and road dust is the problem, increase the follow distance and slow down. I thing you just put yourself in the "perfect storm" for accident probability.. Good to hear you seem to be ok and the scooters up and running.. As they say, any one you walk away from....

My Choice

Back to the original topic: Yup, it is a personal choice. I have a friend that rides a 900cc Triumph Thruxton. Looked at me one time when I rode up on my 250cc roketa and said that he would never ride a scooter. Not just a chinese scooter, no kind of scooter. ever. Guess it wouldn't make him feel manly. But I respect his choice. I never ever park next to him with my FJ1200 sport cruiser and point out that mine is bigger than his, and much, much faster, though when his developed a small oil leak the second week he had it, I had to mention that it was what you could expect from an English bike. No matter what you ride, someone won't like it. As long as you like it, be happy and ride.. I was asked one time while riding my chinese monkey bike 50cc clone (skygo) if I came from "circus folk". I though that might have been unnecessarily cruel..

Not a bad read. My complaint about it would be the title. The article is about midpriced rides and is a good primer for the new to the scooter owner that does not want to do their own wrenching. The article strays away from that near the end when talking about buying used to save the money, then about how you will need to learn to do some of your own wrenching. It is his opinion that you can't get a better deal buying a low cost china scoot because you will then have to replace parts and do your own work. If you are completely unable or unwilling to work on your own bike, then that is fairly valid. But I feel, like many others, that you should know how to work on your own vehicle. If you have enough money that you can hire others, then that is great. But one of the best features of low cost scooters is that the parts are pretty cheap, and working on them isn't all that difficult. Just my opinion, of course...

You might be surprised to find out how many people have both scooter and motorcycle. I have a mc-79-250 scooter and a 1990 FJ1200 sport/cruiser. Most days it's a toss up on what I ride in to work. For the weekends, it's usually the motorcycle unless I'm just just running around within 10 miles or so.. Congrats on the vstar..now you can start saving for this: www.mtcvoyager.com/voyager-standard-trike-kit/

Movable shields on small scooters would be pretty nice, but I haven't seen it yet. The Burgman 650 has one, I think, and more cruisers are getting them. the closest I've got to doing that is to make some lexan strips in 3" x 14" to double stick to the top edge of my shields to change the wind flow. One of these days, I should try making a slide channel so that at least 6" movement is possible.. Most of my riding is <> 45 to 60mph.
