I will try the solder route Texan. I just hope I don't melt down the front end of the scooter. Keep us posted if you have any lens melt down problems. I do ride at night and have 45 45 bulbs, which are the better then the 35w bulbs, but having more light makes riding at night a lot safer.

The diesel engine sound was more then likely loose valves. Since it is now running good, your mechanic did something right to fix the problem. Running hot is not good at all. Is your fan kicking on at all? Have you checked the coolant level? Is there coolant in the over flow tank?

Air filter status: clean. Valve adjusters: discovered. Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. Upon further investigation, I've discovered that it is the Linhai model, not the Honda clone. SO what kind of belt and where can I get one? Mines an automatic btw, I didn't know they even made manual scooters, but I keep seeing mention of a clutch; dunno if that makes any difference, just thought I'd throw it out there. Also, playing around in the guts, I came across this brass cover plate that had a spring under it, and a rubber circular object with a small pin needle sticking out the end, which out of foolish curiosity, I took out, now it's not starting!! Gah. I'm afraid I may have pulled a 'typical female' move and messed with something that shouldn't have been messed with, lol. I'm hoping not! Any idea what that was? >.< You removed the needle valve and diaphragm . It is never going to start until you replace it. Make sure the diaphragm is clean and put in the same way as removed.

At least you know your enricher is getting power. If they are working right they get warm at first then hot.

IMO it depends on high the winds were. I know when we have high wind warnings I'm lucky to keep the scoot in the right lane. If you are into a strong headwind your body will slow down the scoot. I know I can feel the scoot slow down and speed up when the wind hits me head on and then dies down.
Back fire might be from the A/F screw. You are getting too much gas and not enough air.

Ok, now you need a different size belt. 856 23 30. There are many vendors here who sell that belt. You may wish to try ebay as well. To locate the idle screw on the linahi engine. Lift the seat, remove the two screws holding on a plastic cover. You are now looking down on the top of the carb. If you are on the kick stand side the screw is on the opposite side with a spring under it. To make it idle faster turn the screw clockwise. As stated before 1/8 turn at a time and let the engine adjust to getting more gas. Watch the tack and when it's between 1800 and 2000 you should have a smooth running engine. Mine runs best at 2000.

Texan I like the splice idea. Looking at the picture of it I'm trying to visualize how they connect the two wires.
Jalet, I am dangerous with solder. Every thing I've tried to solder has turned out to be a disaster.

Here is one link to finding the belt you need. absolutelyscooterparts.net/catalog/drive-belt-p-124.htmlI when changing the belt take off the bell cover on the clutch and take a good look at the clutch as Cruiser said it could be worn down. More then likely you will need a impact wrench as the variator fan and clutch nuts have to be removed to replace the belt.

Where did you purchase it from?

You most certainly have a belt under the CVT cover. Do you know what engine you have in it? Linahi or Honda clone as they use different belts. Also there is something else wrong in there as your belt should not even be close to wearing out with 2000 miles on it.
More then likely you might need a valve job as it should idle fine at 1800-2000 RPMs.

Texan, I am going to let you do the testing on it. I was at Auto Zone this morning and then had two sets of H4 sockets. The one for $11.99 was for higher output lights. Did you just cut and solder the wires or used the twist method and plenty of electrical tape?
Good idea with removing the rubber boots. I don't think even in the rain you would get water into them. I do my best to avoid riding in the rain, too many nuts on my a** every time it rains.

Royldoc, who cares if someone comes on the forum and sees an answer to their question and leaves and says nothing? That's what Google does and it's apart of everyone doing free research. No harm no foul. You did join and you donate as well. I'm sure you are thankful if you need a part and someone gives you a link to where they sell it or gives you advise on an issue.
All it is is common courtesy. I grew up in the thank you years and have taught my kids the same way.

I answered Luke's question first, but how could my original post scare anyone off from joining? If anything we all want positive feedback to questions asked. Isn't this a give and take forum? Or is it meant to be I'll ask a question and if it works see you later forum?
LOL Cookies I sure did watch Deadwood. I didn't see too much civil law and order in Deadwood.
