I have had good luck with .004" for both. I found before I used the tool for the job I had to reset it many times. John

In side the Handel bars there are a bunch of green wires, then one running towards the main harness. Check that one.

I should have suggested checking the valve lash while you had the valve cover off.
How is the oil level? Blue smoke at first start up lasts a minute. If your still smoking (blue) then it's a ting problem like cyborg says. If it is more black it could be too rich and causing the boging.

For the no start, I would pull the spark plug to see what it looks like. Then check for spark too.
